Er, I think my country is your country. I was just aping Bill.

Bugger. Look, don't take it out on me, just because I can't read. :D

Anyway, My county is sunny today. So ner.

And some other amusing, diverting comment to draw attention away from my poor reading skills...

:p

I wonder what actually became of those words. Its funny what "such abuses" ended up meaning. And what "responsible" ended up as.

Words mean nothing if not put into practice.

Nice back-flip there old boy - so how did the blacks in America enjoy the virtues of the first amendment in 1791

I think the original discussion point was actually very interesting. And the poll could have been about any nation really. Which suggests to me all nations are exceptional in some ways, but not any more exceptional than any other nation

I think most people think that their country of origin (or possibly residence) is superior.

Or, to put it another way:

Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.

Not well. It took a while (and a lot of blood) for those ideals to be implemented as fully as they should have been. But unlike the French revolution, those ideals were put into practice, even if limited practice. Your example is particularly hollow given that free speech was an example of limited government, and one of the central operating principles of the French Revolution was that the revolutionary government should not be constrained in order to succeed. But that's hardly the only irony: you have been arguing for the existence of free speech elsewhere and also against the very notion of free speech as a good thing. Don't think I've forgotten your justifications for censorship. Back flip indeed.

Show me where I have made any statements about censorship - My point was and continues to be, free speech carries responsibilities. And I am still waiting for you to show evidence the US invented free speech.

Talk about back-flips. Why is it 'shooting youself in the foot' when one of 'the browns' says it, but pure genius when you copy it?

You didn't call it censorship, but that's what your "responsibilities" (legal punishment, ie censorship) amounts to. You have, in effect, called for censorship more than once. For example:

I will try to hold onto that distinction next time I see someone like Fred Phelps call Heath Ledger's parents bastards while they morn the death of their son
Yes because most Liberal democracies expect you take responsibility for what you say - not just shoot your mouth off and then hide behind the shadows of the founding fathers robes

Back to your most recent post:

I never claimed that the US invented free speech. I claimed that we implemented it more broadly than pretty much anyone else at the time, and most other countries since. A claim you have simultaneously failed to refute and also claimed is a bad thing (see above). But go on, continue to ignore your failures.

Really - so you can remotely read my mind, and decide what I really meant? I am sure the JREF has a pretty hefty check waiting for you if you can prove your claim

Wooooooooooosh their go them goalposts

Didn't the greeks invent democracy first...

Some suggest that along with evidence freedom of speech was a strongly held ideal especially in Athens. Unfortunately I dont have a copy of the Athenian City Constitution circa 700BC so hard for me to decide how honest the information is
