These are what in Internet parlance are referred to as LOL-suits, aka SLAPP-suits.

SLAPP is "Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation" and exists to suppress free speech.

Nice how it was A-OK to print stolen climate-gate emails, but this isn't OK?

But the Right isn't about freedom of any sort, is it? That is the message they are sending loud and clear.

Hmmm. I think they have the right to ask people to remove any commentary based on the fake document, but on the real ones? Nope.

It occurs to me that the "Streisand effect" is in play here. I did a news search on "heartland" and they are all discussing this story, and in connection with the story the contents of the leaked papers.

Heartland is going to have a hard time suing everybody.

Worse, the papers appear to reveal that there is a single huge anonymous donor who keeps the place going. The identity of that donor is almost certain to come out as a result of the intense scrutiny, and when that person is no longer anonymous, I'll wager that source of funds dries up.

This might be the beginning of the end of the Heartland Institute.

Heartland serves all humankind by countering climate change brainwash with the truth.

Why are you assuming that the Koch roaches have a conscience?

Ah! It's not the Koch bothers because the documents name them.

To be fair - not to them, though - this could be a trick. Give a smaller amount openly, so that nobody except those in the know suspects you of being the big anonymous donor.

Yeah, this sort of threat is really going to stop people from blogging about the Heartland Institute fiasco. Good luck with that, HI :rolleyes:

Prediction: These stupid threats are going to make the situation at least an order of magnitude worse for HI, because now people will blog about them attempting to silence free speech as a way of covering up their nasty little scandal.

ETA:
what Ben said. They cannot sue the whole Internet.

That would be my guess. Hiding in plain sight.

Congratulations, Heartland Institute. Up until now I was too weary to blog on this particular topic, but now I shall do exactly that - including how you are attempting to suppress free speech with your latest ham-fisted maneuver.

*giving the finger to hypocritical climate deniers*

Maybe the solution is to send it all viral and let the HI shysters spend a couple hundred million tracting everybody down. The more court cases and the more venues in which they have to fight, the more it will cost the fascists to do so and the greater the chances that actionable criminal intelligence agaisnt HI will leak out.

Here's a copy of the so-called cease & desist email being sent out to various bloggers: http://scienceblogs.com/gregladen/2012/02/i_just_got_an_email_from_the_h.php

The Heartland Institute people are complete morons. Whomever is their mysterious benefactor should consider pulling the plug on the funding.

Note that there are several companies we can BOYCOTT in the list;

The targets I would suggest are;

Microsoft
General Motors
AT&T
Credit Unions

AT&T is the easy one; Change your accounts to Verizon.

And it is my intention to beat the bushes until I DO figure out who the big fish donor is, and when I do, I'll make very sure to give them something to sue me for.

I wasn't aware there were leaked documents from the Heartland Institute until now.

This makes my day as they are the big movers behind opposition to public transportation projects here in California.
