The Biblical Realities of Hell

I would say the Code of Hammurabi gave more to today's law than the Ten Commandments.

Paulhoff was asking you to show us examples of existing civil or criminal law that enforces the keeping of the Sabbath, for example, or prohibiting the worship of idols, not to re-quote the ten commandments for the five hundredth time.

And, by the way, regarding the "false witness" thing, it's my understanding that you can lie about your neighbor all day long, and unless someone can show that (a) you have committed perjury; or (b) your lies have caused your neighbor some sort of damage, no one can do a damn thing about it.

Lets see if this helps.

I am the Lord your God

You shall have no other gods before me
You shall not make for yourself an idol

Do not take the name of the Lord in vain

Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy

Honor your father and mother

You shall not kill/murder†

You shall not commit adultery

You shall not steal††

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

You shall not covet‡ your neighbor's wife

You shall not covet‡ anything that belongs to your neighbor

Taken from here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_Commandments where it really explanes this:Sroll down to here.

Division according to different religions

Here are the ones that are civil: even today.

You shall not kill/murder†

You shall not steal††

You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor

The rest keep us out of trouble and they have to do with belief and faith of what is good.
This is what you are using against Christians to get your point across, and anyone can see that from the basics of these just like us today, they the Hebrews, added to them just as we have, to cover all morality, in the culture of the times which should in theory and what is written become better.
I think it has except the acknowledgment by non-believers.

The basics had more to do with what God wants for us, which is where the most addendums are...that you have a problem with, especially.

Punishment or reward comes from men and God.
Men uphold three of them and God upholds all of them.
But if you are a believer then the basics make perfect sense.

Do you consider the previous post to be evidence against the claim that

All our laws that are civil are based on those original ten commandments, do you get that?

Or are you claiming all laws are based on three of the Ten Commandments?

What an incredibly poor argument and even worse defense of said argument.

-All laws are based off the Ten Commandments

-Oh yeah? Prove it.

-Three laws are based off the Ten Commandments. The other Commandments are just good suggestions. I won't even mention the thousands of laws that have nothing at all to do with the Ten Commandments. See I proved it!

Based on and no not new ones, like smoking pot, back then it was probably normal.
Any thing based on drugs.
No pills back then.

So some civil laws are based on the TCs. Surprise surprise.

Actually, the OT has no hell. It has sheol -- the underworld -- where all the dead, including the righteous, go to.

It is a dark, unpleasant place (because it is below the earth and therefore cut off from the sun, and, by implication, from God: "the death shall not praise God / nor those who go down to sheol"), but it is not a place of punishment for sin.

The idea of hell as a place of punishment for the wicked specifically is much newer than that, due to the much later influence of the Persian religion or Zoroasterianism on the Jews who were exiled there.

Actually, IIRC (and if I get interested enough I'll do a quick check on it) Sheol was the name/designation of what was in essence the large, external to the city garbage/refuse/trash pit. To be thrown into Sheol, meant tossed into
the trash pit.:D:D

Gehenna is the one I was thinking of..... and it was a valley used for buring the trash - later (in loving memory) upgraded to hell. Apparently, btw, Sheol as it is used was first use in the late 1500s. Make of that what you will!!

You called somebody ignorant. Is English your first language, those two sentences above barely make sense. I was just wondering if you were intelligent enough to understand that hell is a myth. No such place.
I assume he's either drunk, stoned or a poorly written Eliza.

So where did the dead go before then?
Into the ground - the good one's spirits went on immediately to hebbin' and the others remain still until the end of days (note, this is NOT my theory, I'm just passing on what I read.):jaw-dropp:D

How smart you are but to God they are all civil.
What happens if you beat up your mother, is that not dishonor?
Do we have a law against it today?
Only God can judge the things we don’t in ways we can't.
We could get into the divorce issues that are in the law about adultery and who wins the judgments.
But I would rather not.

Oh, you mean the one back in June? Which was actually a Canadian earthquake? Which did no damage to NY? It's not exactly the kind of "wrath of God" sort of earthquake we've been talking about on this thread, is it?

I said tremors?
We were talking about hell? I don't know where all this is going.
Hell separation from God.
Hell on Earth maybe a withdrawal of Gods protection, the wrath hasn't even started.
This all maybe for a reason… as in humility, because we all think we know it all and can do something to stop it all.
I’m sure if Gods wrath were upon us we would know for sure.

I don't think he has to intervene as we kill the planet.
A rapid global change brought up by our selfishness will probably cull most everyone anyway according to past history.
Who knows?
