When I needed help with my yard I hired a Spanish speaking guy, he needed money, I needed help. I don't give a damn if he's 'legal'

as far as I am concerned, knowingly hiring an illegal alien is aiding and abetting a criminal act.

if no one hired illegals, they would just go home. its a simple solution.

DON'T....HIRE....ILLEGALS.

Why is this former employee still in this country? She's on national television with Gloria Allred talking about how she's an illegal. She should be deported immediately.

Funny how that works huh? Maybe it can temper the view people seem to have about Arizona, seeing how we deal with this issue hundreds of thousands of times a day and in almost every business transaction

That's not really true. Many of the complexes are populated by illegals with no jobs, and many others are here for criminal occupations above and beyond working illegally

Well that's the key bit, isn't it? The Whitmans say they didn't know. Allred claims they were informed in 2003, but the evidence she's presented (the SSA letter) doesn't actually show that.

complexes?

what percent of illegal aliens are here for purely criminal activity?

How do you recommend employers determine if a person is legally allowed to work?

Her husbands writing on the letter obviously doesn't mean anything.

BAC is correct that Allred has not really a strong legal case but wants to bring this to the attention of California voters.

I think it's pretty obvious that she knew (it should have been as obvious as adding two and two), but you can't prove it.

Does anyone think that a CEO of a major company can't put two and two together? She knew alright.

look up their SS number....or Drivers License #.

if there is not one already, therr should be a website for employers where they can quickly and easily verify the legal employment status of all who seek to find a job in the USA.

what about folks who hire nannys, gardeners, housekeepers?

there should be a similar website, but which reveals less personal info. just maybe a picture, DOB, and address.

if every state had a website where we can easily verify who does and does NOT have the right to employment in the USA, we can deal with the illegal immigration issue.

until the day comes when the hiring of an illegal worker brings mandatory jail time, America's immigration crisis will not end.

pass a law mandating 1 year in prison for knowingly hiring an illegal alien, and we will see a very sudden and acute slow down of illegal immigrant flow to the USA...and a sudden back-flow of aliens to Mexico and elsewhere.

Too bad this has nothing to do with this case, apparently.

I'm sure that you *really* think that's a tragedy.

Actually, I do think that. I fully understand why Whitman would not turn the maid into ICE after 8 or 9 years of having her working in her home. She would indeed become a part of the family. Any more personal attacks you want to try on me as your defense of the maid, Allred, and Brown in this case? :D

LOL! Let's apply that logic to another situation.

Does anyone think that Timothy Geithner, well known economist and banker, didn't know it was the law he pay self employment taxes? Yet democrats had no trouble forgiving him when he didn't for four straight years. No, instead they made him Secretary of the Treasury … you know the department that runs the IRS. ;)

Oh gee, what do you know? Geithner also employed an illegal alien for a time. Turns out her immigration papers expired during her tenure with Mr. Geithner. Since he hired her directly, he must have seen her documentation allowing her to be in the US legally. He was supposed to check that, right? Didn't he note the expiration date on them? Nevertheless, he claims to have been unaware that her legal status had lapsed. But does anyone believe that such a smart man didn't know the law? Didn't have his suspicions? How about you Puppycow? :D

complexes?

You might call them "projects" if you were back east, but complexes don't have the run down stigma of projects, they're usually pretty nice compared to what they left in mexico

Enough to have caused me major setbacks in my life twice and partially a third time

It would have to include legal protection for anyone who turned down an applicant because of non-citizenship status. As it is now, not even police are allowed to inquire as to citizenship in most cases and places

It does. It means he saw the letter. But you seem to think the letter itself means something other than it actually means. The letter does not indicate she was an illegal immigrant, but in fact specifically states that it does NOT mean that. I recommend you read the letter, rather than relying on characterizations of it. I've linked to it above.

No it didn't. Perhaps instead of reading the story, you should read the actual letter:
http://tmz.vo.llnwd.net/o28/newsdesk/tmz_documents/0930_gloria_3.pdf

The SSA letter indicated that there was a discrepancy. It did NOT indicate that the SSN was bogus. Note one of the listed possible causes: name change. What do we find on page 2? A name change. And that isn't the only possible benign cause for receiving such a letter either, as the letter itself makes clear.

Edit: note also that the letter specifically states it does not indicate anything about her immigration status, AND that the letter should not be used to take action against her.

That's just not true. The letter shows nothing of the sort.
Oh, BS. The letter says what it says because the US government is bipolar when it comes to illegal immigration. It will turn any back caught at the border, but look away with a wink and a nod when they're in the country.

If there was a genuine working lie detector I'd feel very good betting that Whitman and the employment agency knew she was illegal.

Everyone knows why people hire illegal workers: they don't have to pay them as much as legal low-skill workers nor offer any benefits. It's just exploitation, plain and simple. It certainly isn't because we have a shortage of legal low-skill workers, nationally the high school graduation rate is just 75% or so.
