How does Erickson pulling out his wife's shotgun (he didn't say loaded shotgun or that he pointed it at the geek) when he answers the door turn into "a threat of shooting?" Erickson only says that the twerp would be "scared." So if you understood what "literally" meant, you would have said in the OP "intends to scare" the twerp.

Peephole, it is quite obvious that Erickson meant to threaten census workers by beating them with his shotgun. I mean, that is the primary purpose of a shotgun, right?

I think Teabaggers have just argued that the law should be changed for police officers when confronting an armed suspect. If the suspect is waving around his shotgun "just to scare those twerps", it should be unreasonable to assume he means to use it, and police should be prohibited from shooting him.
