Roman Polanski arrested (discuss)...

Polanski is having a tough time getting bail. Seems that if you've already done a runner once, courts are a bit more suspicious.
Film director Roman Polanski is to offer a "very, very significant" sum of cash as bail to allow him to be released from a Swiss jail, his lawyer has said. [ . . . ] The Swiss Federal Justice Office turned down Polanski's last appeal on Friday, saying the risk that Polanski would escape the country was "still too high."

This isn't going to happen. Here in Atlanta Ga a 12 year old hooker who was working the streets was with a John when the police arrested them both. The hooker was concerned about her John and didn't want anything to happen to him. The courts cooked him anyway despite the fact that the girl could have easily passed for a 20 year old.

I remember Martin Amis commenting on it at the time.This is from The Daily Telegraph

Here’s a section of the first quote it contains from Polanski.

“If I had killed somebody, it wouldn’t have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… f—ing, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to f— young girls. Juries want to f— young girls. Everyone wants to f— young girls!”

Thirty years have passed since Polanski said those words, so he’s had time to reconsider them. Whether he’s actually done so, we don’t yet know. Perhaps he still thinks it’s true that everyone fancies little girls, and that the press was exaggerating the enormity of his crime, and that all this somehow excuses his behaviour.

Later in the interview, Polanski says he likes Paris, to which he’d fled, because it’s “very grown-up”.

Unlike the 13-year-old girl with whom he admitted having unlawful sex.'

The justices said they watched “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired” and quoted extensively from its interviews with David Wells, a retired deputy district attorney who claimed to have secretly advised the late Superior Court Judge Laurence J. Rittenband on what to do in the Polanski case.

“If Wells’s account is true, Judge Rittenband was ushered along a path of iniquity by an officer of the court with a personal axe to grind and no hesitation to engage in unethical ex parte communications and devise illegal, nonappealable sentences to circumvent the defendant’s due process and sentencing rights,” the opinion said.

Wells did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press. He has since said he lied in the documentary. [source]

The Defendant (Polanski): (No response.)

Also, is it even possible for a judge to perjure himself during a plea hearing?

Too bad for Polanski they actually keep records of these things.

Guess we shouldn't be that surprised that there were other victims of Polanski out there...

British actress Charlotte Lewis, 42, who had a role in the 1986 Roman Polanski film Pirates, spoke at a news conference a short time ago, saying Polanski "sexually abused me in the worst possible way when I was 16 years old."

Michael Douglas seems to be wise enough to avoid the controversy:

Hollywood star Michael Douglas said Friday he will not sign a petition during the Cannes festival against Roman Polanski's extradition to the United States, despite his admiration for the director.... Douglas said that, despite his fondness for Polanski, it would not be right for him as an American to sign a petition in favour of someone who had broken the law and "jumped bail."

The judge never reneged on the plea bargain. As has been pointed out before, during the earlier stages of the plea bargain Polanski was told that he could be sentenced to jail, and he said he understood.
