Slow Internet Connection to randi.org

This is what I notice (sitting the Central time zone in the Midwest)

It is usually okay up to 7:00 am, when the EST loads up and starts posting and reading.
It gets to be the worst around 10:00am-3:00 pm, I assume lunch breaks, boredom at work and many other work related factors.

Recently I have noticed that evenings are also getting slower. It used to be that weeknds were the best but there seems to be some real problems on Sundays.

So for you in the UK 7:00 am here would be ~12:00 noon, peaks would be 3:00pm-8:00 pm.

In my biased sample.

Cool Gord!

tracert shows that it goes through the usual trunks but this am the final two are

vlan901.core1.dfw1.rackspace.net 72.3.128.21
aggr3a.dfw1.rackspace.net 72.2.129.11

A slight improvement here now. If people will give us their locations and the time that they see things speed up we will be able to calculate how fast the psychic "energy waves" propagate. :boggled:

xe-1-1-0.er1.dfw2.us.above.net seems to dropping around 20-25% of the packets as opposed to the 25-30 it was earlier. :(

Just to state the obvious, but that isn't a machine that JREF control or have anything to do with. If backbone providers are dropping stuff on the floor, there's little we can do, other than change hosting, and there's no guarantee that going to a different hosting provider will make your route to the forum not go through the broken machine.

I have been unable to access the site ("page not found") for hours at a time frequently in the last week. PING shows the IP active. I didn't try TRACERT, just assumed there was a problem at the head end.

Can someone decode all this stuff for me.

Jref is probably the slowest forum (sometimes) in my bookmarks. I've always assumed they just didn't have enough hosting service (which I assume is quite expensive) to accommodate demand.

The forum is very slow for me too. Sometime when I go to post, I have to log in all over again. I thought it was just my computor but the kids dont have any problems with the sites they go on.

The main problems are two, running VBB on MSQL (that is what an ex-forumite said), then the volume of traffic, add to that searching, the photo support and all the bells and whistles.

Gord,
How would we go about measuring this packet loss ?
have a programmer do it for you...

... if you want it done in a manner that they think it should be done and not always with the expected results you originally hoped for. Talented programmers will even be able to convince you that the results you get are the ones you actually wanted.

:p

Or you can just ask a network engineer. ;)

@Terry. Yup. I am aware of that. I was not saying it is JREFF's fault because everyone knows it is :D

I use something called "Matt's Traceroute". This is a UNIX tool that has been ported to other operating systems. If you "do a Google", you should be able to find a version that runs on whatever flavour of Window$ you use.

When you log on ensure that the box marked remember me is ticked. That way you stay logged on until you log off or delete cookies.

If this machine belongs to the company that hosts the site, you could bring it up with them that one of their boxen is dropping a large number of packets and get them to investigate and resolve the problem.

Just a suggestion - I work in IT Support, so I know that a problem won't get resolved unless it is reported.

I had merely assumed that it was a very large database, and that was why it was slow. I usually access from work, so I don't really notice.

Except when I try and read The REAL Spawn of the Thread That Would Not Die. Man, that thread takes ages to load.

I'm finding today that I'm having a lot of trouble accessing my User CP. It times out, and has to be refreshed. It usually works on the second or third time. When I'm in a thread, there seems to be no problem.

It really helps if you use NoScript and you don't allow javascript from randi.org unless you absolutely need it for something. In fact, it's a very fast forum that way. *shrug*
