Sean Penn has been touring with Chavez and has been very tight lipped. What's with all the hating? Penn may get back to america and say "Hugo has done great things for his people but he must stop XXX and XXX".

He's not exactly down there shining his shoes like Danny Glover did.

No kidding, just because you don't like Bush and American foreign policy does not make the other guys good or some how better! Speaking of which when we are done with Bush, which will be mercifully soon, we can change our policies and actions around the world, can we say the same for Chavez!
 
Penn is a perfect example of Bush Derangement Syndrome: He will support and praise ANYBODY who runs afoul of the Bush Adminsitration.
Frankly,people like Penn are a prime reason why the political Left has such a uphill battle in the US.

Sean was tight lipped while there, and he hasn't said anything said getting back. He was very discrete.
 
As far as I know, we are not at war with Venezuela, so it is incorrect for anyone to call Penn a "traitor" because he spoke to Chavez.

Even though I dislike Chavez's methods, I recognize the rights of other people to disagree with me. And of course we know that the US is quite friendly with a number of dictators, like the Saud family, so can't really say that the act of being cordial with a dictator is Anti-American.

I too will be interested to hear what Penn says, if anything, about his conversations with Chavez.

But I was a little puzzled as to who Sean Penn was until I consulted Google. It seems that he's some sort of actor employed by the American motion picture industry. Let's hope that he never attains a postion of political power, eh?

I thought that was where people like Ann Coulter and Michael Savage called you insane if you disagreed with any of the Presidents policies, especially on Iraq.

That cannot be real! If I was ever president I would instruct my people to get a message to other peoples' people: under no circumstances will I ever kiss another state leader on the lips, especially a dude, particularly one who has a mustache. Also, I am slowly beginning to dig the evil Saudi Prince look. These guys have the turban, rock the aviator sunglasses, and sport a comically evil goatee. Honestly, I don't think it's a bad look. I'd definitely like to do it one way, but I don't have the olive skin. Also, I would never wear the red and white checkered turbans. That is so early eighties.

I have the complexion and the ability to grow enough beard to do the Arabian Prince look. I also have, in a box in the closet, one of those head dress deals, one I bought over there, and some aviator sunglasses.

Just under 30 years ago, I dressed up with a cheesy touristic version of the head dress that I had bought in Egypt, for Halloween. I added the round Ray Ban Aviators, a big old sheet, flip flops, a plastic AK 47 looking toy sub machine gun, and a bunch of eyebrow pencil rubbed on to my cheeks to give me the cheesy beard look of a generic scummy Arab terrorist // PLO dirtbag.

It was a big hit at the Halloween party. I quite looked the part.

No, I won't post pictures, as there are people in the picture who are in garments I'd not show them in without their permission.

If you have MS Photo Editor you can smudge out everything in the photo except yourself. I'm sure more sophisticated photo editing software has the same primative capacity.

Your excuse removed, we await your photo Mr. Arafat. ;)

I can top that.

I had an Arab sheik outfit I bought a few weeks before a renfair held on Saturday, September 15th, 2001. The cloth on the front was really thin and I wore an American flag t-shirt underneath it. I had a half dozen people come up about to make an issue, do a double-take, and make a positive comment.

If Venezuela is being run by a "dictator", then that would mean that Venezuela is a dictatorship.

Personally, I find that quite odd since the CIA defines Venezuela as a "federal republic", and the CIA defines a federal republic thusly:

Federal republic - a state in which the powers of the central government are restricted and in which the component parts (states, colonies, or provinces) retain a degree of self-government; ultimate sovereign power rests with the voters who chose their governmental representatives.

I sure that the incredibly intelligent and well informed poster known here as 'corplinx' will be good enough to let the CIA know how wrong they are about the government of Venezuela.

As for Sean Penn being a "traitor" for seeing Chavez, then I guess that must mean that a good bit of the USA population is also a "traitor" to the USA since the Venezuela is the fourth biggest supplier of oil to the USA.

Man, am I about to split a fine hair.

I believe that corplinx was not calling Chavez a dictator. The dictator that Sean Penn coddled was Saddam Hussein, dating back to a 2002 meeting Penn had with that dictator, which was widely (and quite correctly) criticized, even by his peers.

(Even though there were many reasons not to invade Iraq, Penn's tour of Iraq did nothing to highlight them, and may even have turned people off to the antiwar movement by making them appear to be puppets of tyrants.)

I believe corplinx was saying that Sean Penn's use of "dictator coddling" was to tie his recent trip to Venezuela with the ill-advised trip to Iraq. He was not saying Chavez is a dictator (although he is certainly taking the necessary steps to eventually become one).

Lots of repressive quasi-dictatorial states are listed by the CIA as a "federal republic", including Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Pakistan. (Neither Ethiopia nor Nigeria are particularly pro-American, so it's not like the classification is based on politics, either.) (Lots of liberal republics are listes as "federal republics" as well, including Austria and the United States itself.)

The analysis is based on the documents upon which the government is founded, not necessarily their practice. Although sometimes, the notes will clarify this state, such as Belarus, which is described as a "republic in name, although in fact a dictatorship."

The only state described as a dictatorship presently is North Korea. I would guess that you or I might reasonably describe many other nations as dictatorships. It appears that the CIA applies a very technical definition for "dictatorship", and not necessarily one that is universally accepted in casual conversation.

Chavez is a dictator, it's true, and nobody should be nice to him. However, we are very nice, and allied with, the dictators in Saudi Arabia, who are far worse on their own people, even allowing for the disastrous effects of heavy-handed socializm of Chavez.
 
Apparently, my attempt to poke fun at people who dismiss Sean Penn as a dictator coddling traitor were sorely missed by the audience.

It wasn't missed by the audience, rather it just went uncommented on because you don't realize the level of dislike many people of Sean Penn. The person who earlier in the thread said this hit it perfectly (forgive my lack of ability to do the quote thing):
