Cont: Cancel culture IRL Part 2

I didn't see it firsthand, only a video discussing it in the aftermath.
One of the reviewers at The Dice Tower, YouTube's biggest board game review channel*, apparently commented on social media that someone, I'm assuming Alex Pretti, deserved to die.
He's no longer a reviewer at The Dice Tower.

The irony is that he frequently talked about how important his faith was to him and would sometimes indicate that he didn't like certain games because their themes didn't mesh with his beliefs.

*They're more than just a YouTube channel. They're big enough that they have almost a dozen full time employees and organize multiple conventions around the country every year.

Are you being serious? You really do find the obviously unjustifiable examples more interesting than debatable ones?

the impact is much greater, it’s more like an escalation of the relatively minor thing you’d been warning about years ago. why would that not be of interest to you?

Because we all agree that it's obviously bad. What's left to discuss?

It takes almost no effort to convince progressives that it's bad to cancel fellow progressives.

It also takes almost no effort to convince conservatives that it's bad to cancel fellow conservatives.

It takes loads of effort to convince people that we should allow their opponents to say things they don't like.

that makes me wonder why you don't have an interest in convincing conservatives that it's bad to cancel progressives in these cases?

If you can find a conservative to stand up for those cancellations here, then we'll have that argument.

i doubt you’ll find a conservative here to stand up for them. they’ve completely abandoned the topic they once cared so much about when the shoe was on the other foot. kind of gives credence to the idea that it was just a bunch of ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ the whole time to me

anyway, i think the point being made here is you stopped bringing up examples some time ago right as the conservatives, and in some cases literally the same people who were so against cancel culture starting behaving even worse, but when the progressives were doing the same in a much more minor way years ago you were so much more concerned.

i think it’s a fair question and it appears to me you’re just taking in circles to avoid it

now, maybe i got that all wrong. i dont want to assume that.

You think it's weird that I'd take the trouble to argue against people who justified various progressive cancellations but not take the trouble to argue against *checks notes* no one willing to stand up for the current wave of conservative cancellations?

p.s. I've tried complaining about conservative cancel culture here before, no one bites.

no, i think it’s weird you lost interest and stopped bringing examples to the thread. is that the third time i’ve said that?

I posted examples of conservative cancel culture more than once, starting five years ago. From what I've seen, no one here cares to defend cancel culture unless it's done to defend progressive values.

Why on earth do you think anyone should bother bringing up examples—in a discussion forum—where everyone already agrees?

ok, i believe you. just asking

any thoughts on the conservatives cynically claiming freedom of speech at the time’s current silence on the issue?

I think we should focus on sincere and principled advocates of academic freedom such as FIRE instead of focusing on weak and hypocritical advocates such as those conservatives, for basically the same reasons why steelmanning is better than strawmanning if you're hoping to sharpen your own arguments.

that’s fair. i definitely feel like they should be called out, particularly people like weiss or dave chappelle who were pretty important figures in the anti woke movement

Great. I might start watching the channel now.

cancel culture lawsuits pile up in wake of not sad enough for charlie kirk harassment, including a guy jailed for almost 40 days

Last month, the American Federation of Teachers filed a lawsuit against the Texas Education Agency for the way its leadership asked superintendents to report teachers for "inappropriate content" they may have shared about Kirk. The agency collected 354 complaints, and 95 are still being investigated. The AFT says this process — which was endorsed on X by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott — unleashed a "wave of retribution."

and that’s texas, the place where joe rogan and his 250 elite comedy assassins left california and went and saved comedy

beige frequency two part coverage of the still ongoing scrambling of the big name comedians trying to avoid or deflect criticism for being involved in the riyadh festival, and the fallout for the comedians that went. be prepared to hear a lot of "you're the real racist"

What's the point? You'd just call it accountability culture.

I was doing that when you were on the first of I’ve lost count of how many posts lamenting the fate of Gina Carano.

Didn’t stop you then.
