There was some thought during the 2016 (I know I thought it) that Trump didn't really want to win. He just wanted to the attention and the ability to market the Trump brand. Him winning was as much of a shock to him as it was to the rest of the nation. I wonder if he's kind of doing the same thing here.
When you think about it, if he blows the election he has zero of the responsibilities that come with the White House, he can still scream and moan that it was stolen, he can keep grifting his people (which is worth more than 400K) and won't have to worry about running again.
I'm not saying Trump is smart enough for a conspiracy, but coming up with a plan to maximize his profits and have no responsibility it right up his aisle. Dragging down Vance doesn't bother him a bit because Vance (or anyone) aren't people to him.
