“Woke”

I have it on good authority that it is 'woke' to think of Columbus as a murderous criminal.
Feels like this is a reference to something someone actually said.

One down, two to go.

Here is the excerpt from the NYT: What makes you think that "woke" should be taken as pejorative when used in a poll from this fairly mainstream left-of-center publication?

You're claiming that being "too woke" is meant as a good thing in that poll?

In my view, Wokeness means you will not tolerate any speech you consider to be racist, ageist, sexist, anti-gay, anti-trans, anti-Queer, anti-immigrant, anti-abortion, pro-gun, anti-union, anti-Muslim, pro-christian, pro-white, pro-Israel or pro-Jewish.

Any such speech must be shouted down and silenced. Violence to accomplish this is acceptable. Speakers can be physically blocked from college campuses and other places.

Folks espousing such views should be cancelled from their jobs and positions of power.

That's Wokeness, in my view.

We know.

If "woke" wasn't a good thing in moderate amounts, any possible amount would be too much. This is why you rarely hear phrases like "too fraudulent," or "too slanderous," or "too adulterous," because there is no good amount of fraud, slander, or adultery.

And what point was *you* making?
I should think that fairly obvious.

Unsurprisingly, most Leftists have abandoned self-identification as "Woke". They understand it has earned a very negative and unpopular connotation.

If it was good to be "woke" five or ten years ago, it's still good. Nothing has changed other than jargon escaping its original social bubble.

I know. Ethnic/Racial Safe Spaces are still all the rage and opposing views on abortion, immigration, climate change, transgender rights, Palestine and gun control are deemed unacceptable and forbidden to be aired in the public square. Failure to comply means Cancellation or worse.

It's a reference to something a great many people have actually said.

Okay, so nobody in the world is "woke" then. It's a complete strawman. Cool.

No they haven't. I know how much you want to believe that, but no, they haven't.

Many of us don't have any problem with the term, knowing full well that it is basically a usage coined in right-wing circles by persons miffed that their bigotry, hypocrisy and general dickish behavior are called out. The right-wing attempt to paint what they call "wokeness" as a negative trait is only a more nuanced version of other usages like "ferminazis" and "SJWs". It is just to gaslight a discussion. They know that the imbeciles in their circle of influence will pick it up and take it forward without even questioning the validity of the characteristics attached to the term.

the critical, ESSENTIAL feature of any label is its vagueness: "Woke" is great, because it never gets defined and can apply to anything demagogues don't like.

It tells you everything when a the problem is something that is never clearly identified and that can never truly be fixed is singled out as the one problem above all others.
It tells you that the goal is not to solve problems, but to make people angry.

Wow, that is pushing it! The mentioned post says how one organization is planning to retire the term "brown bag lunch" because "it can have negative connotations for people of color."

You're not supposed to say "brown-bag" lunch at the University of Michigan either. "Picnic" is also verboten. See Appendix A, "Inclusive Language" (page 5) here. I love the note at the top of the table: "This list is not exhaustive and will continue to grow." The wokes' work is never done.

What they don't understand, or admit, is that is their own fault.

Most of the people who use the term "woke" these days are people who think the woke worldview—or, to avoid the circular reference—the Critical Social Justice worldview—is pernicious. That is not using the term as a pejorative; it's a shorthand for "adhering to the CSJ worldview." There's really no other good succinct term for that. That's why a lot of serious people who are critical of the CSJ movement end up using it, usually reluctantly, and with an explanation.
