“Woke”

Because the author starts off thinking this is about teaching his children to ask permission from a little white man. At the end of his quest, he still sort of thinks that.

Why this brilliant author is not flipping over the Red Man (or Commies or whatever) holding his hand up to refuse this permission is a horizon as yet unexplored.

I suppose he does after having "the little White man" used as a descriptor by his White friend. He was the one who read race into it.

The highlighted describe the actual colour (or a surname) the "Brown Bag Lunch" doesn't actually refer to the colour of the lunch bag (though I guess it might in some cases) So can easily be renamed. Personally, I'd recommend organising the employees' times such that they did't have to do any work/meetings at all over lunch, but there you go.

As to being triggered by colours as a symbol of racism, I recall reading a piece by a person of african extraction complaining, amongs other things, that the white stick figure on a black background of the "walk" lights on UK pedestrian crossings was a symbol of racism. I wish I could provide a link, but it was a year or so ago and I didn't take a huge amount of notice. It was on "The Atlantic" website if anyone wants to hunt it down.

So yes, it could have been the subject of a complaint, and the person doing the complaining no doubt considered themselves "woke" to systemic racism. Were the organisation being "Woke"? If there was an actual complaint then probably not. If they did it as a result of an internal attempt to be politically correct then yes.

Aren't they red and green in the UK? Trying to recall and I come up with a blank.

To be honest, I'm not sure myself now. I thought they were changed because of red/green colourblindness, but then that blog looks suspiciously like the one I remember, except it wasn't in the Atlantic and it wasn't about the UK.

Still, at least it proves my memory of the actual complaint was valid. :)

Ok, so Woke is a useless term for various reasons.

What do we use to describe the occasional uproar over racial issues that most folks think are, well trivial at best? I'm thinking things like the SF school board renaming schools because of the names having alleged connections to racists of the past? Or that college in the midwest that demoed a boulder that was once referred to with a racist epithet, literally once as far as any one can tell.

Woke is still pretty useful for recognizing a right-winger frothing at the mouth over something you describe as trivial at best, though. As in: if a right-winger complains about changing a school name (a rather mundane occurrence) being "woke", you can rest assured that the name really should have been changed.

All three of these sources are using the word as a pejorative; so the answer is "no, no, and no".
In the Slate piece; "woke" is being used as shorthard for someone having a "liberal conscience who is deeply moved by...various political and social crises" of his time and place in history. This is a perfectly cromulent and politically neutral usage of the term, and not remotely pejorative. It is literally what people mean when they self-identify as woke.

Given your premise for the sake of the argument - surely we shouldn't be trying to find anything? We should actually address the facts and arguments rather than wanting some way of dismissing them without addressing the facts and arguments?

And having addressed the facts and arguments and found them trivial, what then?

A very belligerent acquantance of mine stated this about being "Woke":

"I am VERY proudly "woke." As in: antifascist, pro-empathy, pro-kindness, pro-inclusion, antiracist and pro-loving the Earth. I am WOKE and strive to be more so. The fash is just gonna have to deal with us."

Presumably this poet is (or rather was) following d4m10n's advice to not allow majority usage to define a word?
I presume they were following their own sense of what the word "woke" should be taken to mean and how it should be used to pass on ideas & values to children.

While following your own sense of what a word (or phrase) should be taken to mean and how it should be used to pass on ideas is fun and all, it's a good way to cause confusion if the majority of users don't use the same sense of what that word or phrase should be taken to mean.

Case in point: your examples which overwhelmingly use "woke" as a pejorative, while you are claiming that it isn't and they aren't using it that way.

Is it your opinion that describing Elvis as a man "liberal conscience who is deeply moved by...various political and social crises" was meant to be pejorative?

If not, what makes you think Slate was using the word as pejorative?

Do you not understand that "overwhelmingly" doesn't mean the same thing as "universally"?

One down, two to go.

Here is the excerpt from the NYT:
We asked what they thought of Black Lives Matter. We asked what they thought of Blue Lives Matter. We asked how they felt about policing and issues of educating students on trans issues. And then we also asked the question directly, do you think Democrats are too woke?
What makes you think that "woke" should be taken as pejorative when used in a poll from this fairly mainstream left-of-center publication?

Bear in mind that most respondents replied in the negative, saying that Democrats are not "too woke."

I have it on good authority that it is 'woke' to think of Columbus as a murderous criminal.

When the terms common use includes the king of Spain in 1500 as well as all these modern 'SJW's, perhaps there is something to be said for it having become a feeble pejorative.
