Pre-TAM get together? (In NY)

I'm starting a new thread about this, since some of the things in the old one are no longer accurate.

Anyway, I will be in New York, and I was hoping to get some locals together to do something fun. Perhaps just a drink one evening, in a good bar somewhere, or we could even make it a weekend thing (if we can find a place to convene). Especially since some people will have to work during the week.
Or perhaps even both. It's all the same for me, I'll be on vacation, with loads of time to spend on fun and interesting stuff. Don't make me get bored :p

Unfortunately, I've already found out that Jeff can't be there, as he's needed at the JREF headquarters in Florida, but a number of people have already expressed their interest in meeting up.

I realise it's short notice (well, it is by now). But I'm sure you won't want to miss this. You've all seen the NewtonMAss pictures.

Perhaps something low key, but very good -- pizza and beer at John's on Bleecker St. in the Village?

I suggest Friday night might be best for most people.

ETA: That would be Friday January 20th. I think you said that you are in NYC from Tues the 17th through Mon the 23rd, right?

Yes, that's correct.

And an excellent suggestion for an activity.
Would there be a need to make reservations for this place?

Why thank you. :)

A friend of mine who use to live in the village introduced me to that place. Great pizza, big tables, can order wine or beer, it's a nice place. And a good location in two ways -- its a fun area and very easy to get to.

They don't take reservations, but I don't recall ever waiting that long.

Right now, it reminds me of a place I know right here.
But I'll let you know how that comparison stands up once I've been there.

So, isn't anyone else going to join us? Not that I'd mind, but the more the merrier as they say ...

I think that night looks good for me. As it happens, John's is, oh, about 2 blocks from my apartment. Shera is right -- no reservations, but also short wait times, particularly if we get there before 8:00 or so.

The thing about John's is that it's not that good a place to sit and talk for any appreciable period of time. It's kind of noisy, and the staff wants you in and out. That's going to be true of most restaurants which don't cost a bizillion dollars. For sitting around and talking, there's a good little bar a couple blocks away called Kettle of Fish which has some couches in the back room I could probably get. Alternatively, there's a pair of bars across town (call it 7 blocks) called Burp Castle and Standings which serve specialty Belgian and American beers, respectively, if you're into the gourmet beer thing. Current beers are listed here and here. Just let us know what you want to do.

If there is a quieter place than John's that will not pressure us to leave, I'm all for that.

Of course, exarch as the official out of towner should have the deciding vote. :)

I'd love to come, but Friday is no good for me, especially since I will probably be heading to Jersey early Saturday AM for a tourney. Poo wish I could join you all.

Sorry to hear that Kochanski. There actually seems to be a lot of New Yorkers in the forum. Maybe we can have another get together another time. Perhaps a picnic on a weekend day in the spring or summer in one of the city parks. It would be quieter than a restaurant and we wouldn't have to worry about management wanting people to leave. ;)
</end derail>

I think it's up to you New Yorkers to take me to the place you think will impress me most ;)

And Kochanski, I'm all for organising a second night to get together. I'm thinking that daytime is good for visiting museums and tourist traps, but after 7PM, when everything closes, I'll definitely need locals to drag me around and sneak me into the best places in town.

For those of you not attending TAM, that's what makes it such fun: hanging out with fellow skeptics. So get a taste of the TAM-spirit and meet up.

And I'm still waiting to hear from Scott ...

NYC is a a 3 hour drive from here, but I could come down on a Saturday or Sunday. Are people going to get together just for lunch or something more?
Well, I was still hoping to get some of the New England skeptics together for a meeting, like they have done so many times before over the last few months, but I figure that's a lost cause by now (the main problem seems to be finding a place to organise it). But if Mercutio isn't going to attend TAM, I'm gonna have to get over to his place to dive into the scotch. And I figure the best time to do that would be over the weekend ...

ok, I officially have no plans for next Friday night so if you don't mind one more person I'm there.

There will be drinking involved right? I know a bunch of places too so if you need suggestions I'd be glad to offer up some.

Well, what are we looking at cost-wise? Other forums I've been on had a lot of people who show, uh, resistance to a nine-dollar beer, even if monks toiled over it for weeks and weeks. If that's the case here there's no shortage of bars with $4 buds. As Harry says, there's lots of places and we can fit any taste. In fact, on the other extreme, if you're into the Scotch and don't mind dropping a Jackson or two we can go to dba, whose single-malt menu is here.

That's a great place! :D I've been trying to remember the name & location of that place for a very long time to take people there and I just couldn't remember. They have very interesting beers there also.

that's a great place. That would work for me. Here's the listing from citysearch. http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/11350344/new_york_ny/d_b_a.html

and they have Miller lite and Bud Lite...Awesome!!!

...kidding.

Having lived on Jones Street (by John's) for many years, I'm surprised you guys chose that section of the Village for a "quiet place", but what the hell. My local pub when I was living there was the Four Faced Liar (somewhat appropriate place for skeptics to meet, no?) since my friend owns it and drinks come at a discount.

Regardless, I'll stop by if you guys finally decide on the place.

Friday night, hmmmmm. Depending on what time I can catch a train, I might be able to make it. Later for drinks it a real possibility. I would need a place to crash for the night cause catching the last train at 2 am bites.

I don't know my way around real well (Would only be my 4th time in the city) and I would be taking a cab from Grand Central most likely to where ever, unless some brave soul who drives in NYC wants to pick me up. If any natives could PM me with a little more detailed info on the where and when I would appreciate it.

Other option would be coming into the city on Sunday (my daughter has a cheer competion on Saturday). I'm always willing to see the Darwin exhibit again or do anything else exarch might want, well almost anything;)

Let me know.

Boo

Hmm, we had 3 posts in favor of dba and then your post MWare. Then almost no more posts. :(

I'm all in favor of supporting friends but I think we need to come up with a plan before exarch leaves for NY. :)

I suggest dba unless someone says its extremely noisy. I went there once, but on a summer's Sunday afternoon and we had the backyard almost to ourselves. So I don't know what it would be like on a Friday night.

What about a time? 7ish?
