Pre-TAM get together? (In NY)

Are we skipping dinner? I was gonna suggest Johns at 6:30 or 7:00, then dba after that. If we wanted to eat closer to where we drink I like Two Boots, which has a location (their original one, as it happens) a block away on Avenue A.

That sounds good. I like John's, but perhaps we should eat at Two Boots to make it easier for people to find us. I've noticed that out-of-towners are not use to doing as much walking. Also that part of the city is not as gridlike and it might make it easier for someone unfamiliar to get lost.

Besides I'll get to try a new place! :)

Hmm, we had 3 posts in favor of dba and then your post MWare. Then almost no more posts. :(

I'm all in favor of supporting friends but I think we need to come up with a plan before exarch leaves for NY. :)

I suggest dba unless someone says its extremely noisy. I went there once, but on a summer's Sunday afternoon and we had the backyard almost to ourselves. So I don't know what it would be like on a Friday night.

What about a time? 7ish?

I guess I didn't communicate effectively. I was supportive of anywhere you guys had decided on, hence when I said "I'll stop by if you guys finally decide on the place."

I certainly didn't mean to halt the discussion and apologize if I've further complicated things. Additionally, I kinda invited myself to this thing anyway which was probably rude.

Again, my apologies.

Oh, great sadness

I'll be in the city Sunday the 15th to Wednesday the 18th, so it looks like I'll just miss out on all the fun. : ( Well, not all the fun. Just the "get together and meet people from the forum" fun. ; )

Cool.
So how many people do we have already? About 6? And rebecca will definitely show up too, especially if she can hitch a ride with, um ... Larry B. for instance *hint, hint*.

Sorry to hear you won't be able to be there skeptrix. I'd have liked to meet you :(

I think it's up to you New Yorkers to take me to the place you think will impress me most ;)

And Kochanski, I'm all for organising a second night to get together. I'm thinking that daytime is good for visiting museums and tourist traps, but after 7PM, when everything closes, I'll definitely need locals to drag me around and sneak me into the best places in town.

For those of you not attending TAM, that's what makes it such fun: hanging out with fellow skeptics. So get a taste of the TAM-spirit and meet up.

And I'm still waiting to hear from Scott ...

Define best places? I know lots of cool places, here is a link to a cool place that is free and enjoyable especially for skeptics: http://www.sonywondertechlab.com/explore/index.shtml

I have been there and it is a fun thing to do in an afternoon.

Sweet. That looks like a must see indeed.
I went to the exploratorium in San Francisco last year, and I'd only managed to get half way through when the place closed.

Best places = places that are suitable to hang out with a bunch of nerdy skeptics discussing (loudly) about weird stuff like quantum physics, homeopathy quacks or fantasy roleplaying (to name a few subjects). Or alternatively, depending on what mood people are in, a place to get a drink and try a few moves on the dance floor.
Ideally, a place where both situations would work.

Maybe other people have something to add to that definition?

Ah, well how about a place to PLAY fantasy roleplaying games and other games of all sorts, in that case you can go to Neutral Ground any day of the week and just about any time (although they are closing earlier right now than they do other times of the year).

Address 122 W 26th Street between 6th and 7th Avenue 4th Floor. http://www.neutralground.net/

That is my place to hang out and play cards. And if you want a true geek out, they have a Magic prerelease of Guildpact all next weekend. Fair warning place will be packed to the seams and it is only a place for experience gamers to go during prerelease times, since the air requires special breathing abilities  Other days of the week it is a nice place to go to play games, locals are all friendly.

Have y'all thought about going to see the Darwin exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History? http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/darwin/

A tip about the admission price: The suggested price is not the price you have to pay, although if you can afford it, great. The AMNH is a "pay what you can" museum.

You can't do that! I can meet you Mon eve. if you like. Anyone else up for it?

Well, I'm not the best communicator when it comes to posts and e-mails also. Something about not having that real-time 3D quality I guess. So my apologies too.

Looking forward to seeing ya'll Friday night! :) And perhaps some of us can get together on Mon night, (Jan 16th) doesn't seem right not to see Skeptrix when she is in town.

I'm taking off in the morning, so if you manage to arrange a meet, call me. I'll send you a PM with my cell number.

Good evening manny.

Alternatively, there's a pair of bars across town (call it 7 blocks) called Burp Castle and Standings which serve specialty Belgian and American beers, respectively, if you're into the gourmet beer thing. Current beers are listed here and here. Just let us know what you want to do.

I see you mention Burp's Castle. I have not been there in many years. Great beer selection. Definetly quiet, in fact only whispering is allowed. The last time I tried to go there, they were closed because one of their bartenders(brewist monks), had passed away. On the same sign they had "Help Wanted, Bartender. Attached to that place was a place called Brewski's. They are both a couple of doors away from McSorelys a New York landmark as far as bars go.
Anyway, I just was reading the thread and the mention of the place brought back some nice memories.

So, what's the final plan for Friday? I'll be at Grand Central between 7-8 depending on the train schedule. What do I tell the cabby?

Can't wait to meet everyone.

Boo

There is the smallest chance that I might be able to make it. I'll be flying back from the JREF early Saturday morning..I could possibly switch flights to Friday morning if the JREF is under control.

So...please keep me in the loop!

Okay, a turning-upside-down of plans means that I will hop on a bus to Boston as soon as I land in New York, then come back on Friday for the party, possibly bringing rebecca along if she can find a place to crash in NY (that's as good a hint as any I think).

I'd like to try and make this, since it is just a short couple of train trips up to NYC. Are the plans finalized.

Ok, so who knows a good pizza joint and a nice pub type place with a dance floor in NYC where a bunch of wild sceptics can cut loose?

Ex, what time will you and Rebecca be arriving from Boston Fri night?

First suggestion of where to eat and drink wins.

That's a very good question. And I hadn't realised that the bus to and from Boston actually needs four and a half hours to make the trip, so if I (we?) want to get to New York at a reasonable hour (at least before 8 PM preferably sooner), we'd have to leave during the afternoon (before 3:00 PM), which might not be an option for rebecca, who may have to work.

I'll keep you posted with the exact time.
