I remember an episode of a sitcom in the early/mid-90s (The John Laroquette Show) in which a police officer supporting character was arresting a criminal while having an argument with another character. She ended up repeatedly slamming the criminal's head against a table or car door to emphasize the points she was making in her argument. Someone looked at her in shock, and she said something like "What? He was resisting." I think she also made a reference to Rodney King.

The police felt a need to exert their power over the population. They can commit crimes with impunity, and did so to remind us of that. The people are getting uppity, and the cops want to put us back in our place.
 
That's all this. It's a show of force.

In the one of the other threads we're discussing a woman who barged into store, berated and racially insulted the clerk, and then physically shoved the clerk but then when the clerk slapped her back she, like completely on a 180, had a near break down and walked of the store in near tears because the simple concept of any hitting her back caused her an existential crisis level of confusion.

This is the same mentality. "But wait... they are fighting back?" is a total alien concept to the police. It's like explaining color to a blind man. It's why they make PTSD claims about the stress of murdering people and win.

It's playing the victim after you've been the aggressor the entire time. It's just more pearl clutching just with tear gas and rubber bullets. The punctuation on every rubber bullet fired and every tear cast cannister thrown is less "Stop resisting!" and more "Stop being so dramatic!"

I think someone did jam signals with a cell phone in the first Independence Day movie. We all know that Trump bases reality on the things he watches on his tv.

Unfortunately, the answer is yes. He's gearing up for a loss and a refusal to transition power without a fight, without a call for violence.

Since his policies are providing a path for Covid-19 to be the largest pandemic in history, it may not be about credibility. With so many people dying and sick, even a glimmer of hope of a vaccine might be enough. To a dehydrated person in the desert, a glass of bleach might look quenching.

Like blocking live footage from places of unrest so police violence goes unchecked?

Though so far it seems they do not feel need to even try to hide that. Almost like they want to show it off and show they can and will get away with that.

United States of America is already police state, especially if you belong to one of groups of undesirables. Rethuglicans are fine with that, obviously.

Army bases named after confederate soldiers, i.e. the people that wanted to break up the country.

I wonder if Trump would be happy if they promised to rename them Fort Putin and Fort Kim Jong-un?

ETA: How about Fort Epstein, Fort Fort Stone, and Fort Manafort?

You would figure with how poorly he is currently doing with race relations right now, he would back off defending naming things after people who represented racism. But there you go.
