Cont: Brexit: Now What? 9 Below Zero

[ Boris ] is not the only one leading a minority government (other examples in Europe: Sanchez government in Spain, Michel government in Belgium ...).
UK parliament doesn't seem to know how to govern by consensus. I suppose they've not had enough practice at it. The opposition parties tend to vote against pretty much everything on general principle - even when, if they were in power, they'd be proposing the exact same policies.

Do you mean like the ERG who in an minor position formed a consensus with the DUP labour and others that we shouldn't leave the EU on a dodgy deal that would have Ireland having separate rules. Once they got to power they couldn't wait to sell out the Northern Irish people.

To be honest, it's the most obvious way for the UK to compete post-Brexit, long hours, low wages, no employment protections and dangerous workplaces.

The UK's glory days were the late 19th century so let's reinstate Victorian working conditions

With brexit voters reliably showing they will support anything put in front of them that could equal a leave scenario and, they will be adamant that that's what they actually voted for all along it would be fun if, boris said ye olde Roman decimation will be introduced.
I can imagine brexit supporters chanting "kill one in ten" demanding that their self-sacrifice was always the plan for leaving the European Union.
bojo wouldn't have to let us carry out the stoning to death of one in ten but, it could turn out to be popular in the long run.

Channel 4 news had the DUP party conference on. Boy has Johnson blown it with them! He will now be as welcome as The Sun in Liverpool.

Yup, it's almost as though persistently lying to people and then betraying them leads to a lack of trust.

For all that Johnson is blustering about wanting an election and the opposition parties are too afraid to fight one, an alliance of the SNP and the Lib Dems drafted legislation for an election to be called on the 9th December. Johnson has rejected it.

They want to hold the election a WHOLE THREE DAYS before Johnson wanted to hold it.

UK elections are normally on Thursdays - which is Johnson's proposed date. I don't know whether the SNP and LibDems think they'll get some kind of electoral advantage by holding it three days earlier on a Monday* or whether they just don't want to agree with Boris - a sort of 'not invented here' attitude.

Either way, Labour are set to vote against - they really don't want an election until their opinion poll ratings are better - which may entail replacing Corbyn.

* students more likely to still be in their university towns in the run-up to Christmas perhaps?

Meanwhile Corbyn has made a bizarre porridge claim in response to the rumour mill questioning his health.

“I’m eating more porridge every morning to make sure I can get through even longer days,” he said. “I’m absolutely looking forward to this campaign.”

Since when did increasing your porridge consumption enable you to work longer? Is that really a thing?

It's called 'irony'. Porridge is rich in iron.

You are wrong and records show you to be so. Before Theresa May's disastrous premiership most governments had vanishingly small amounts of Bills or motions rejected.

I suppose we could thank May for calling an election and winding up with a minority government.

No, it is not. Well, if you substitute the traditional water or milk with blood, maybe.

Somehow ... I can see both BJ and Corbyn doing that.

British politics is scary.

"Whoosh" ;)

But now I bother to look:
Oats are a tasty and easy way to add iron to your diet. A cup of cooked oats contains around 3.4 mg of iron — 19% of the RDI

I thought that Jeremy Corbyn was going to ask them to abstain because voting against would have no functional purpose and would likely send the wrong political message.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said his party is not prepared to support it until a no-deal Brexit is ruled out, with his party's MPs expected to abstain in the vote.

The reason it was three days earlier than Johnson's proposed date is that it would prevent him from having the time to push his Brexit deal through before the election. The legislation would also have taken No Deal off the table.

In other words, it was calling his bluff.

You need Fe2+ to have useful iron in your diet, oats have iron in the form of Fe3+. It turns out the charge on the ion really is that important for bioavailability. The alternative is iron already bound to a protein, such as hemoglobin, but oats to the best of my knowledge do not have any hemoglobin. I have seen oat milk before though, so I could be wrong.

That's why vegetarians and especially vegans are at risk of iron deficiency anemia no matter how much spinach and red beets they add to their diets. Plant based iron is poorly absorbed by the body and the amounts it contains are pretty much irrelevant.

But I think we're drifting slightly off topic :)
