Trump should only be impeached if there's a reasonable shot at success. The truth doesn't matter, only Trump's removal from office matters. What good does it do to impeach Trump if he is acquitted in the Senate trial going into the general election? Impeachment should be used to put Trump's transgressions in front of the electorate but timed in such a way as not to have a resolution until after the election.
As long as it can be reasonably shown that the Senate Republicans simply don't care about anything higher than rank partisanship and are solely basing their refusal to impeach on that? Failure to impeach can be made to backfire on them. If handled appropriately, of course, which Democrats don't have a good record of doing.
This isn't even remotely close in nature to the political hit jobs that the GOP have just kept doing, to the point where Republicans frequently seem to have lost the ability to distinguish between valid concerns and stuff that Trump and other Republican leaders pull out of their patooties.
