Barring a smoking gun and a dead teenage prostitute under the desk of as naked Trump, I doubt anything major will happen (and even then knowing the GOP they will "pardon" him after a "tearful" confession). I could be dead wrong but I think that they will have in "managed" so that he may do blunder after blunder, but nothing major putting the US in anything beyond an embarrassing position.

That was clear from the get go.

I'm pretty sure Comey's memos and testimony will constitute a smoking gun. But like I said, if they don't it's not like this is the end of Trump idiocy.

O'Donnell is telling everyone in the WH to lawyer up. 40 people in the Nixon WH went to jail. (Actually they didn't all do time but still.)

His guest says it's too late.

Joy Reid pointed out Comey had absolutely no one he could go to with the info of Trump's obstructionism at the time, from the DoJ to Congress, they were all Trump people.

I've worked for one boss that could be quite creative when it came to not-remembering or mis-remembering what happened or was decided in meetings. I took to the habit of always taking notes and as soon as possible after the meeting would send those notes to my boss - it's called "covering my arse". Surprised that isn't more common in the USA civil service.

Well President Trump once again gave a masterclass on how to seize the news cycle...

People complaining about Comey being fired ? Have a brouhaha about releasing secrets to the Russians.

People complaining about releasing secrets to the Russians ? Have a brouhaha about about Comey being fired.

It's a kind of mad genius....

Trump didn't plan on the stories about him giving the Russians secrets and him trying to get Comey to kill an investigation into Flynn getting leaked. In fact he's absolutely furious about it.

There is no genius plan. He's just an incompetent moron so there are all kinds of bad stories about him.

I think it's very likely that everyone around Trump did their best to stop him from firing Comey: that is why Trump had to send his personal bodyguard to deliver the dismissal letter and not go through the formal channels.
Trump made the calculated move that firing Comey was less destructive than letting him carry on, just like with his tax returns, when he figured that releasing them would cause more damage than withholding them forever.
And he is right: it probably bought him weeks or months until it becomes clear how the investigation can proceed.

Ivanka and Jared reportedly did not try to stop him from doing it.

And I'm sure the investigation is currently proceeding anyway.

I'm not claiming that there's some kind of masterplan, but his tweets do tend to set up the next news cycle and his willingness to lie and to brazen anything out means he's not mired in explaining or justifying for any period of time.

I'm sure something else will come along in the next couple of days to knock all this off the front pages and out of the consciousness of the electorate. I expect it to be something to do with his visit to Saudi Arabia:

- How wonderfully Presidential he was (for not cocking up his speech)
- How badly he cocked up his speech
- Why he cancelled his trip

Having all kinds of bad stories isn't doing him any favors. He is very unpopular for a new president.

He's still President and at the moment under no significant pressure from within his own party as far as I can see. He still enjoys the full support of his party (publicly at least) and he's under no real pressure to vacate the Presidency.

His unpopularity is due to the complete absence of support from Democrats - it's well over 80% with Republicans. This can easily (although IMO erroneously) put down to partisanship rather than any deficiency in the President.

His support with Republican voters is because they are mostly idiotic authoritarian followers who only listen to right wing "news" outlets.

Has nothing to do with him bumping bad stories out of the headlines with more bad stories.

Oh, ********. People in the Democrat party should open their eyes and stop listening to the fake news. If they did, they'd learn that the Clinton Crime family ordered the hit on DNC staffer Seth Rich.

But now he's settling into a pattern, bouncing back and forth between looking corrupt and looking incompetent, and it's feeding a narrative that he's totally lost control of. The right-wing propaganda network will keep the "base" sedated with alternative reality, and the Republican Congress will hang on to him as long as they think they can still get tax cuts for the rich and slashes to healthcare spending, so we have a long way to go, but this will not end well for Trumpism. In the end, all we need to do is outnumber these ********.

As far as the GOP are concerned, Trumpism doesn't have to end well as long as they get their tax cuts and slashes to healthcare spending. Indeed, it's likely that they'll hand the problems of sorting out the deficit and fixing healthcare to the next Democratic administration (as usual), declare that Trump was an aberration and then move on.

Why would he cancel his trip? The golf courses closed?

Trump strikes me as the kind of person who likes to feel he is in control. He may feel that leaving the US at this time will allow his conspirators to plot against him in his absence.
