2016 Presidential Debate II

Definitely noticeable to me.

As I watched I found the whole event strangely beautiful, with the movement, body language and juxtapositions. The citizens right there, the inquisitors, the chairs that seemed like props to pace around. It put me in mind of experimental theater or perhaps a Greek tragedy. I actually teared up at the end when they had to compliment each other. I don't think Hillary was slighting him by citing his family; I thought she was saying that he must have something good going on - besides money - to command such loyalty. I actually teared up at the sincerity with which he praised Hillary's tenacity. For a moment I thought maybe something good could be salvaged from this awful election cycle.

A couple of random points that might annoy people, but I make odd connections:
1. Are we really being fair to douchebags when we use the term as an insult? As much as I love the phrase "Il Douche," I wonder why a feminine hygiene product ended up as a slur.

2. The use of the term "sexual assault" can be problematic. In my state it is a synonym for rape and it involves penetration. Grabbing a woman's pudendum I would be more likely to classify as "sexual abuse." However this is largely because as a newspaper reporter/editor I was sensitive to using legal terms correctly.

One other thing: "Scumbag" means used condom, and the paper's "slot man" - last eyes on copy - would not allow it in print. Same with "snafu." And probably he wouldn't be too crazy about "douche" either.

Remembering that the topic overall is in one of my specialty areas: douche bags, scumbags and enema (x form) are all references essentially to waste products/uncleanliness (even though the purpose of the 1st and last are cleaning oriented), and the removal of waste. Thus, they are considered representative of something (someone) unclean, a waste, useless - by transference.

Definitely agree on the sexual abuse term!!!

Are you referring to Il Duce (Mussolini)???

Comedy relief. Some people are saying this really happened.

Donald tried to get a first hand look at Steve Wynn's new resort back in the late 90s, but wanted to catch them off guard so went in with no advance people or entourage. As he's sitting down, a drunk comes over and slobberingly and loudly says "Hey, douche bag, how ya doing? Lemme buy you a drink."

The waiter interrupts the drunk and tries to get him to go back to his seat, but the guy keeps it up. "S'matta, my money not good? I said I wanna buy this douche bag a drink. You want a drink don't you buddy?" The waiter flags over the manager, who panics because he recognizes Trump so while waving over the bouncers, phones upstairs to Wynn's office to warn him that he better get there. "We've got an idiot drunk in here harassing Donal Goddamn Trump of all people. Just what you need during opening week."

Wynn comes in to the sounds of "But I jus' wanna buy that douchebag a drink. Why can't a guy buy a douchebag a drink?", as the drunk is being dragged out.

Steve goes over and says to his Maitre D', "Jacques. How did this happen? We don't allow anyone to treat our guests rudely. I expect you to be on top of this and offer Mister Trump our fullest apologies."

"Monsieur Trump??!! Alors! I am zo zorry. I was distracted for a moment and zis how you say, "riffle raffle" he slips into my lounge. Zis is horrible. We will make this up to you? Let me offer you a complimentary drink, s'il vous plait?"

"Well, thank you", says Trump, "I'll have a vinegar and water."

That one gets saved!!!!!!! And it is very believable!!!!!

Does anyone know what that thing is he took a whiff of at one point? I just caught a glimpse but it looked like he used an inhaler.

Of course, I may be mistaken. He could have been popping a Tic-Tac.
That would explain why Clinton kept moving around!

Anyone mention how at some point, Martha Raddatz began to almost debate Trump herself? She seemed seriously angry at him and was going back-and-forth a little bit with him. Hillary looked like she was gonna sit back and watch. I'm curious no one has mentioned this (Neither democrats nor republicans. Democrats could point out how this is another sign that they won the debate. Republicans could point out this was proof that the moderators were biased against Trump)

I was glad about that. Trump doesn't answer questions and people let him get away with it. Nice to see someone press him for an answer.

Yeah I mentioned it here as it happened.

I felt it was bad form.

I didn't. Trump's answer on Aleppo was a sham. The nation needs journalists to expose the candidates depth, not sit idly by and let them carry out the fraud that they know what they are talking about.

Yes, we need journalists to do that. But it is not the role of a debate moderator.

Google's trending search of "what's a lepo?" at the time says a bit of public edumication wouldn't be a bad thing.

It's really ***** sad that no one reads any thing longer than a celebrity's tweet. While I think it is reasonable that the public isn't well informed about Syria, it's absurd that Presidential candidates aren't and even worse when they are getting security briefings as Trump is.

I disagree. I think it's even more important. Letting any candidate bs his way through something extremely important is unacceptable.

It's also the role of the debate opponent.

I'm baffled why Clinton didn't address questions directly to Trump (and vice versa for that matter).

A debate moderator needs to introduce the questions, manage the time limits, try to keep things on topic, and remain neutral. Not debate: that is the opponent's role, and we need to see the opponent do that (if they are capable). In this instance, Clinton was there to correct Trump in his facts. That was part of her job here, not the moderator's.

If this had been an interview between a journalist and Trump, then the journalist had the responsibilities you describe. But a debate is not an interview between a journalist and a candidate. It is a debate between two candidates. The moderator needs to make sure that happens, not get in its way or be seen helping one of the candidates over the other.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't want the moderator to debate the candidate, but I do want them to follow up ensuring clarity.

I agree. I would put it a bit stronger: I'd want the moderator to cut off the candidate immediately when they drift off into other topics, and bring the candidate back to the topic at hand. There's only 90 minutes, you have to use them effectively.

Right. Time management is part of the moderator's job. Following-up to insure the question was answered and the candidate stays on topic is too. But they need to remain neutral and leave the debating to the opponent.

The time each candidate spoke turned out to be fairly even. However, Raddatz certainly appeared to be in the tank for one particular candidate, not what you want from a moderator.

I don't think she was.
