Dude, seriously.

Cullenz isn't claiming to be psychic, just to have sussed the mystery at some level before others did. I too was watching the news unfold and wondering what was really behind it, but had posted no clever guesses so I get no points.

When Lochte did his last interview with the NBC people, he acknowledged that he screwed up and lost millions of dollars in endorsements. I really feel for the guy. in addition to not being the brightest bulb, he's been training for years, who knows when the last time he had a drink was, he really had no tolerence.

I cannot fathom what motive Lochte had for lying to his mother. The truth would have maybe made him look bad in her eyes but then again, I think Mother Lochte knows what she has so it probably wouldn't have shocked her all that much. Was he just trying to get sympathy from her? I just don't get why he had to lie so hard in this case. Why even say anything to her at all? And then lying to the cops makes even less sense.

I've been shaken down by Mexican cops a few times in my misspent youth (16-20 yo mostly) and I never felt the need to tell my mom what happened. I just gave the cop a crisp Jackson "para su familia," and got my butt across the border.

They made it safely back to the Village. It should have ended there. Now the dumbass has basically lost everything for a stupid lie. I don't understand...
 
He who lives by the image, dies by the image. The endorsements were contingent upon image. Boy peed in his own pool.

He lost a fraction of what Tiger lost when he imploded, problem for Lochte is that he hasn't any kind of chance at a comeback. One trick pony, all now digested oats.
 
Bentz gave testimony to the police about what happened. He said that there was a passer-by who courteously acted as a translator because the guards spoke Portuguese and the swimmers spoke English. That bystander has been identified and interviewed - he's a DJ. He says he saw no guns drawn. Remember that Lochte told us various things said by the ahem armed robbers. All of that had to go through the third party translator. "Get down on the ground" was actually a demand for them to sit on a curb and to wait for the police to arrive because there was vandalism damage. Loche wouldn't sit and instead yelled at the guards. This was probably when he said that if they get sent to jail then America would be mad. All of that was through the translator witness.

It seems to me that Lochte knew they weren't really being robbed and instead were dealing with security guards and that real police were on the way. What seems to have happened is that Lochte did vandalism damage and wanted to get away without paying for it.

He has said more things since his apology letter and it looks like more lying and doubling down on lies told. He still hasn't mentioned the necessary translator who I recall was also filling his gas tank there.

In the film Quicksand (1950) Mickey Rooney's character steals $20 from the service station he works at and ends up wanted for murder.

Here we've got a story where the protagonist vandalizes a men's room and it ends up costing him seven figures, all because he lies to his mother for no reason.

The movie makes a heck of a lot more sense.

He sussed the mystery in about the same way I have sussed that I will die within two weeks of a full moon. But by all means, give him points for patting himself on the back for saying, hmm, seems fishy probably a woman or falling on a table, when everyone else was saying, hmm, seems fishy all around, could be anything.

I'm reading that same thing from other sources as well. Bentz says that the only damage was the ripped down metal sign (which made a loud noise). He says that none of the swimmers even entered the bathroom. Bentz told police he has no idea why Lochte pulled down the sign, nor any idea why he later lied about being robbed.
 
If I'm ever involved in a scandal about four Olympic swimmers in a public mens room you can bet it'll be a lot more interesting than low-key vandalism. I feel extremely cheated that this wasn't so much sexier than it turned out to be.

Again, everyone acknowledged that the whole thing was fishy.

You guessed a woman was involved, insinuated that maybe drugs or prostitution could be in play, and mentioned a drunk guy who hit his head and made up a story about getting in fight.

Which of these things actually happened here?

Recap:

It was a security guard and not a cop. You didn't guess that.

It was petty vandalism. You didn't guess that.

They paid for the petty vandalism. You didn't guess that.

There was an armed guard. You didn't guess that.

The armed guard was paid to avoid police involvement. You didn't guess that.

You guessed that the lie was to cover up something nefarious or illegal. It wasn't, the lie was just him BSing to his mom about a wild night out.

They were drunk. We all knew that.

But yes, other than all of the actual facts of the story you were completely right. They were buying illegal drugs and using prostitutes and had to make up the story to cover for the fact that they had blown all their money on hookers and blow. Add table to head as necessary.
