This whole Khan feud has been all Donald's fault. Even his own campaign advisors know how stupid it is.

Ignoring Advice, Donald Trump Presses Attack on Khan Family and G.O.P. Leaders

Mr. Trump’s advisers have impressed upon him for days that his clash with the Khans was counterproductive, urging him instead to show deference to them and train his attacks on Mrs. Clinton, people close to the campaign said. Emissaries from the Trump campaign who spoke with Republican lawmakers and party officials in Washington were given the same bracing assessment. A few Republicans in Washington even suggested that Mr. Trump should apologize to the Khans.

Mr. Trump has instead gone in the opposite direction, standing by his harsh treatment of the couple and brazenly antagonizing Washington Republicans.

Amazingly stupid.

It's all optics. Mr. Trump doesn't do optics. He does Trump. This is what makes him a leader.

Which is a pack of lies that would be laughable if it weren't so hideous, since the sources quoted are his aforementioned overview of the history and elements of fiqh and a *********** book review published in the Texas International Law Journal thirty-three years ago.

I also liked how his insidious Saudi connections are that he worked for a giant international law firm with offices worldwide, that the Republican Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court also worked for, which Saudi nationals occasionally use because one of those offices is in Riyadh. If that's a "direct connection", it's certainly a rather novel use of the term.

This is pathetic.

Doesn't matter to the Trump campaign, it's the Trump's campaign tactic of diversion. If they can get the focus away from the Khan's son dying for the USA onto a discussion on to whether they have any kind of association with those "bad people" well wink wink you know what I mean?

Trump still has the wholehearted support of the GOP machine and, barring a few notable exceptions (respect to them IMO), the major figures in the Republican Party.

Not by a long shot. He has been rebuked by folks at all levels of the GOP. Ryan and McConnell couldn't even bring themselves to mention his name in their publicity releases. Noteworthy GOPers have resigned from the party. And this, while from a biased source, suggests dissatisfaction is the mood up and down GOP ranks.

The GOP race is really a one man show. Trump is trying to sell himself, the GOP elite, rank-and-file, etc. are just window dressing.

So right wingers have decided that attacking Khan is the way to go:

Pretty much a "you're a Muslim so your people are part of the problem" and "Behghazi!!!"

Highly predictable, really.

Playing to the crowd only works for the crowd. It does again highlight how utterly moronic Trump is. He's like a compulsive gambler: "Just one more roll..."

It's the Streisand effect. He deleted his website so we would read it.

Lawyers are full of shenanigans like that.

Just shows that we need to impeach Roberts, they will all get behind that clearly.

How long do we have to wait to see this backfire you speak of? If there is none, how long do we have to wait before you will admit you were wrong?

Backfire in the sense that it will increase his probability of winning the election rather than decrease it. How long do we have to wait? For the polls to stabilize in a couple of weeks, although it is difficult to attribute a move in the polls to any one factor. There is no doubt in my mind that the Khantroversy hurts Trump's polling in the short run. Polls often reflect how the respondents feel about the most recent news, and may not even reflect how somebody actually plans to vote on Nov. 8. For example, even a Republican who plans to bite the bullet and vote for Trump might answer that he'll vote for Hillary or a 3rd party candidate right now as a way of sending a message to the Trump campaign to reverse course. I would do that, although in my case it's a bit more complicated.

Anyway, I think it will backfire because, in the end, the attacks on Trump are way, way out of proportion to the offense. It might take a couple of weeks for that to sink into the collective consciousness. With the passage of time, I think people do tend to become more dispassionate about their analyses. Maybe some will even think that the inability of Trump to react the way a normal politician would, i.e. disingenuously, is a positive attribute. Makes him easier to understand or read.

The problem is that there is no way I'll be able to prove or disprove my proposition. If Hillary expands her lead in the polls over the next two weeks, I think it will provide evidence that I was wrong, but it won't be dispositive. The same goes for the case where her lead contracts again. Obviously, there are lots of other issues buffeting both campaigns.

Ultimately, though, Hillary is in a tough position if the spotlight ever moves to her again. The entire rationale for her candidacy is a paradox. She is the quintessential establishment candidate in an anti-establishment election year. She represents a continuation of the policies of the last 8 years, even though the majority of the electorate wants to see a big change in course. Her claim to have the experience to be President is undermined by the disastrous consequences of her tenure as the nation's chief diplomat. Her claim to be the safe choice for President is undermined by her incompetence in handling classified data and her corruption in covering it up. And her claim to be steadfast and resolute is undermined by her total capitulation to the left wing of her party in order to fend off Bernie's challenge.

Hillary's campaign is like a car with no brakes that is headed towards a cliff. Trump's campaign is like an electric car headed towards that same cliff, but with Trump's foot stomped on the accelerator. The moment he takes his foot off (and I'm not saying it will happen), his car will slow dramatically (due to regenerative braking) while Hillary sails on and over.

It's telling that Trump supporters choose not the high road but instead went on the attack and started trying to dig up dirt on the Khans.

Trump isn't stomping the accelerator, he tied a brick to it and is in the backseat getting familiar with his future 4th wife. All the Trump supporters who go on about how he's playing 4 dimensional chess and will any day now pivot and grab up the centrist vote while keeping his base are deluding themselves. He is completely incapable of getting out of his own way. He is who he's shown himself to be in the campaign.

That's adorable. The attacks on Trump are in no way disproportional. His offenses are amazing. His supporters tone deaf.

You have a curious definition of "disaster". Nothing in Hillary's tenure is even close to out-of-the-ordinary. Her worst "offense" was Benghazi, which was a systemic failure. True, she was at the top of that organization but Republicans and Democrats both contributed as much if not more to that situation.

Oh my GOD! Hillary made concessions. Isn't that the hallmark of a good negotiator? Isn't that the one and only thing Trump supporters can point to as a positive trait for Teh Don?

I never said that Trump's reaction was right. In fact, I explained that it was wrong. However, it was not so bad as to deserve the nonstop vilification delivered through the conduit of the mainstream media. My prediction is that the vilification will backfire. That was always my point.

You also predicted that Carly" Fiorina would be "unbeatable".

A good speculation would be the site is now be flooded with hate.

Or, as I said upthread, just flooded. That alone can be a reason for an IP to shut your site down. 4chan alone is capable of setting off denial of service attacks 24/7 at a moments notice, nevermind the accidental DOS of ending up on the top of google news and a kajillion vaguely curious randoms looking you up.

Trump: How many jobs did Humayan Khan create? NONE! I created a billion jobs! And they're GREAT jobs! The BEST! And how many sacrifices did he make? JUST ONE! How many sacrifices did I make? MILLIONS! I've fired millions of people, sacrificed them! And he got himself killed! I'VE NEVER GOTTEN KILLED!
