I think it relies on the assumption that anyone who rises to that level of command is a competent serious person, and their competency will bleed over into politics, which never seems to happen. There have been rarities, like Ike and Grant, but we mostly don't pick from the military when we elect Presidents.

Looking more and more like Gringrich for Trump.
Problem is that Newt is not much liked in the GOP,and polls even lower then Trump among the general electrate.
And his kissing up to Trump for the job in the past few weeks is even more obnoxious then Christie...and is probably seen that way by many in the GOP.
It is a Dumpster Fire choice...but then all of Trump's veep choices are Dumpster fire choices except for Pence....and if the Newt stories today are true, then I think Pence probably,through a private message, put himself out of the running.

Please be Newt! I don't want there to be any doubt among the GOP that they've totally lost their minds. Putting Newt on the ticket would erase that doubt.

Someone just described Newt as Trump's "Mini Me", That about sums it up......He offers all of Trump's negatives, but no positives to shore up Trump's weak areas.
Whomever Donald ends up with proved that point. His list of Republicans willing to be his running mate was of bunch of dead enders that needed the position to prolong their political careers and Mike Pence that the Indiana GOP was begging him to take so they could replace him on the ticket for Governor. It seems his list is down to Newt, Christie, Pence and Flynn with Newt as the favorite. None of them add much if at all and Pence is the best because he doesn't detract as much as the others and won't just encourage Donald's crazy.

We're being played? They wouldn't do this in advance if a decision was made. Why would they bother; they could just as readily wait until the announcement was made. It's not like he's a scheduled performer at eleven a.m. Wednesdays. They're trying to push Teh Donald towards Teh Salamander.

So what is your opinion of Eisenhower? Was he good or bad as a President. Personally I have mixed feelings about him although generally my opinion is positive. But he too made blunders.

Pence is the best choice?
Of Pence, Gingrich, Sessions, Christie and Flynn. His options are severely limited due to anyone with a future in the party past this election distancing themselves from him to save their own political future.
Anyone else notice that Pence lost his place in his notes at the speech yesterday? He was in mid-thought, feverishly looking through his note cards and it was obvious he couldn't find his place, so he just went to the slam Hillary card, Make America Great again and handed it over to Trump.
Losing your place isn't a big deal, but it is surprising to me that he couldn't wing it through the end of his point.

I want it to be Christie for two reasons:
1) He's a boob that will deter as many votes as he will attract (maybe more).
2) This keeps him out of the Attorney General seat, should Trump win. He has already promised that if he becomes AG, he is going after Colorado, Washington, etc. (The states that have legalized recreational marijuana).

Even Donald has to be aware of the amount of damage he's done to Christie's reputation since Christie endorsed him, right? Christie is the gofer of the campaign and it's been made painfully public.

I like Boobs. Christie, not so much. Then again, boobs typically come in pairs so Christie and The Donald together.....
CNN was absolutely positively sure last night that it would be Pence, so he's probably out.
I think we can all agree that boobs are part of what makes our country great.
When I saw Pence speak last night, I was all but sure he was out of the running. But Donald showing up for breakfast certainly makes it look like he's the guy.
