“Woke”

I'm required to do mandatory anti-racism training for work. I have to re-do it every year.

Of course, they call it "Respectful Workplaces" and I have it alongside mandatory training in "Privacy", "Anti-Fraud", and "Health, Safety and Wellbeing".
I have to say, this annual training stuff isn't terribly onerous and is rather often hilarious. I've had to deal with open racism and religious prejudice from clients at work but at the same time I'm boning up on avoiding nanoaggressions.

My office to or 3 years ago encouraged everyone to let people know what their "prefered pronouns" were in their email signature.

I don't play these silly games so I of course did not comply. No one has criticized me yet for not being woke enough but I expect someday it will happen.

My response will be "piss off, Mr Virtue Signal".

Feeling passionately aggrieved about imagined future criticism must be exhausting.

If this comes to pass I look forward to your posting about the ramifications of this pent up hostility and how it is so unfair to you.

The pronoun stuff fills me with a sense of fatigue, but I'm secure enough to admit that maybe I'm just old and out of touch. Which is a natural consequence of latter middle age.

Having to swallow **** that your company's clients dish out while being told to treat your coworkers and clients like human beings is probably as old as capitalism.

No it hasn’t. Don’t assume noise for dominance.

But wokism (Critical Social Justice) has become the dominant worldview in just about every American institution: universities, K-12 education, high-tech, the media, scientific publishing, professional societies in science and mathematics, and is becoming increasingly influential in science funding.

I wish it were noisy. If the general public knew what was going on, they'd put a stop to it. Unfortunately, it's mostly going on behind closed doors. So far anyway.

What tenets of Critical Social Justice distinguish it from, say, mainstream liberalism?

I don't think it makes a lot of sense to allow the adversaries of Critical Social Justice define what the CSJ project should be taken to mean.

They don't. They get their definitions from the original philosophical founders and from the modern writers like Kendi.

I don't think it's fair that CSJ activists dishonestly pretend that the definitions are false and disguise their aims in terms like, justice and equity, that they've co-opted from liberals.

Charles Pincourt may well have accurately characterized "the knowledge, political, and subject principles" which undergird all the various woke subdisciplines. That said, he wasn't exactly quoting those principles from those who originally promulgated them or those who popularize them today.

The foundational works of these things aren't secret. You are a knowledgeable fellow. I have a hard time you don't know that the originators of the "Critical" part of this gave a definition of what they meant with a bunch of requirements that made something a Critical Theory rather than a regular theory.

That should be easy to show that is happening. For example with changes in physics textbooks used in university courses.

Is it just me, or do others here when they see the word “woke" to describe people or institutions see it as shorthand for “I don't like people telling me I shouldn't hate on blacks and treat women as sex objects”?

Yes, it's just you, and handful of others. And I can't help but regretfully note your surprising use of the offensive term "w---n" (W-word). Clearly, your training in wokeness has been insufficient. The woke term for the outdated, archaic, and offensive term "w---n" (W-word) is "people who menstruate."

And, uh, so exactly how is it expressing hatred for blacks to question the views of people (the woke crowd) who claim it's offensive to use such basic terms as "woman," "man," "father," "mother," "male," "female," etc.?

It's been conservative pandering to populists for decades that the commies are secretly infiltrating education with [scare words here] whenever our understanding of how to best educate naturally develops.

Common core, new math, end forced prayer, free lunch, free lunches being healthy, busing, not allowed to beat kids, etc. etc.

I'm trying to scope "Critical Social Justice" without relying on its critics like Pluckrose or Lindsay or Pincourt.

Perhaps this can be done, but from what I'm seeing on google most of the hits are from the anti-woke lot. Here is one exception.

To me that seems like standing in the middle of a forest, and arguing that without a GPS you can't tell whether you aren't still in your house and that without chemical analysis we can't really say whether the branch growing out of the tree in front of us is made of wood, or Bakelite. We know what the word "critical" means in this context, we know what "social justice" means, and it's ideological connection to the word "critical". Are these questions for questions sake?

That said, here are some links to usage that I would think predate Lindsay's use:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18476851/
"Examining the potential of nurse practitioners from a critical social justice perspective"

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19934835/
"Inequities in health and healthcare viewed through the ethical lens of critical social justice: contextual knowledge for the global priorities ahead"

https://birthto5matters.org.uk/wp-c...o-Learn-and-Civic-Competences-FINAL-final.pdf
"‘Critical social justice’ – minding strongly about personal or social injustice
and wanting to correct it; caring for the environment "

Those are from around 2008. There doesn't seem to be any great shortage of such documents.

ETA: This looks like a fun one:
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23837570/
The paper is called "Toward decolonizing nursing: the colonization of nursing and strategies for increasing the counter-narrative" and it mentions "he authors conclude with strategies to increase the counter-narrative to continued colonization, with a focus on critical social justice, human rights and the structural determinants of health."

I've even found you a definition from a pro-social justice book:

https://www.google.co.uk/books/edit...AQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&pg=PA1&printsec=frontcover

Check the preface. They link it straight back to critical theory. Effectively it's applied critical theory.

And another book on it:
https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Critical_Social_Justice_Education_and_th/uWoOEAAAQBAJ

That seems to be talking about white social justice being about equality, where as critical social justice being about equity.

Such as a privilege walk exercise in a public middle school in a Bible Belt suburb.

In your opinion a single "privilege walk" exercise in a public middle school for which the school was punished would demonstrate that "Critical Social Justice" is "the dominant worldview" in k-12 education? When you are unable to "scope" Critical Social Justice without relying mainly on the critics of CSJ?
