Will tariffs make America great?

Another tiny example of the mess being caused by the tariff insanity which just came to my attention.

A board game I backed through crowdfunding before the tariffs just added an additional $21 charge for US backers to cover the tariffs. That's better than I was expecting, since they had initially announced that they were stopping production entirely since they were looking at the earlier 135% tariff and had no idea how they were going to afford to make the game.

You really don't have to worry. I have seen that Trump himself, and all his secretaries in the administration assure us that it is the producing country that will pay the tariffs …

well i guarantee the central banks of the rest of the world who buy trillions in bonds know who she is

It's been said again and again on this board but Trump is squandering US soft power.

In this case, tariffs are explicitly mentioned in the BBC story.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un attending a military parade in the centre of Beijing, alongside Russian president Vladimir Putin and China's leader Xi Jinping, is quite the photo-op.

It's also a key diplomatic win for Xi.

The Chinese leader has been trying hard to project Beijing's power on the international stage - not just as the world's second-largest economy, but also as a diplomatic heavyweight.

He has emphasised China's role as a stable trading partner while Trump's tariffs upended economic relationships.

Absolutely not a surprise at all. I guess Trump and the GOP's isolationist dreams will come true.

USA - the Albania of North America. As technically advanced and worth about as much as well.
I disagree. The US economy is the largest in the world and the US is among the leaders in most technologies.

Neither of those things will change any time soon. There are specific areas where the US government looks likely to go backwards - medicine, especially vaccines and renewable energy are examples - but individuals and individual states are likely to keep things moving forward.

It's definitely not the UNITED States of America. Nor is the progress created approximately even among them. Only a handful of states would make it as self-sustaining countries, those states where the vast majority of the US economy is now driven from.. The rest would become (or continue to be) backward, ignorant, isolationist dumps squandering any progress...Albania.

Loads of countries' mail services have now suspended mailing parcels valued over ~$100 to the US.

It's self-imposed Continental Blockade.

Now it's 30 countries suspending parcel delivery to the US.

some info on cook’s suit against the government regarding them rigging up some nonsense and trying to fire her

As Law&Crime has reported in a separate case over Trump's attempted firing of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) commissioner, the Supreme Court case Humphrey's Executor v. United Statesestablished that "inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office" were the causes for firing an FTC commissioner, as Congress expressly intended to insulate the independent fair competition agency from being unfairly subjected to the whims of the executive and, by extension, politicization and dysfunction.

In that case, the estate of William Humphrey sued for back pay and succeeded in arguing that then-President Franklin Delano Roosevelt did not have the power to fire him without cause after policy disagreements.

Cook maintains that the same applies in her case, because the wrongdoing alleged in the criminal referral has not been adjudicated through due process, because it relates to alleged conduct that actually predates her confirmation as a Fed governor, and because Congress likewise intended for the Federal Reserve to be independent of political pressures by requiring "cause" for firings by the president.

trump gives up the whole plot by saying once cook is gone he'll have enough of the board on his side to lower rates.
Doesn't matter, ultimately he'll get his interest rate cut, followed by a brief debt-driven bubble and predictable collapse before any decision is made by a court regarding the legality of his actions.

Trump just wants cheap debt. Of course this will hurt many MAGA supporters who rely on savings, but it's only himself he cares about.

Donald responding to the Appeals Court
He's going to the Supreme Court they will help.

Donald J. Trump
@realDonald Trump
ALL TARIFFS ARE STILL IN EFFECT! Today a Highly Partisan Appeals Court incorrectly said that our Tariffs should be removed, but they know the United States of America will win in the end. If these Tariffs ever went away, it would be a total disaster for the Country. It would make us financially weak, and we have to be strong. The U.S.A. will no longer tolerate enormous Trade Deficits and unfair Tariffs and Non Tariff Trade Barriers imposed by other Countries, friend or foe, that undermine our Manufacturers, Farmers, and everyone else. If allowed to stand, this Decision would literally destroy the United States of America. At the start of this Labor Day weekend, we should all remember that TARIFFS are the best tool to help our Workers, and support Companies that produce great MADE IN AMERICA products. For many years, Tariffs were allowed to be used against us by our uncaring and unwise Politicians. Now, with the help of the United States Supreme Court, we will use them to the benefit of our Nation, and Make America Rich, Strong, and Powerful Again! Thank you for your attention to this matter.
