As of a week ago, he still hasn't made a decision:

“I’m just not ready to make it,” Biden told Telemundo when asked in an interview what was stopping him from deciding on another run.

Biden said the day after the November midterms that he “intended” to run again, barring any unforeseen episode. And he and his family have signaled to others – including in early December to the visiting French President Emmanuel Macron – that they are preparing for a run.

Biden’s reluctance to definitively announce his intentions is in part driven by a desire to avoid triggering compliance with candidate election laws. Advisers, however, note that when Biden says he’s a “great respecter of fate,” it’s less of a dodge than it would appear.

Not sure exactly what that last sentence is supposed to mean unless it's kind of a, "Who knows if I'm running, I might drop dead tomorrow?" thing.

Kamala plans to run too:

Asked about Democrats who fret behind the scenes about both Biden and Harris being on the ticket, the vice president responded: "Joe Biden ... has said he intends to run for re-election as president and I intend to run with him as vice president of the United States."

They always say they aren't running because they have a specific ritual in mind where they plan to announce they are a candidate—so they can get huge applause and concentrated news coverage.

They aren't just going to announce it to some Bozo reporters shouting questions. And said Bozos keep up their ritual of asking and asking and then discussing and analyzing the answer.

You'd think after this pattern repeats itself over and over year after year that one of the two participants would get a clue and have a better answer.

Then you have Trump and his announcements that he's going to make a big announcement "tomorrow". Obviously he knows what said "big announcement" is and there is no reason to make an announcement he's going to make an announcement.

Seriously folks, there is no reason we should follow this same pattern ourselves. A simple answer will do: 'Biden hasn't announced yet but all indicators are he will run'.

What are the indicators though?

Is he just going to make an announcement without any marketing, no signs, no slogan, no leased headquarters somewhere, no dedicated staff? (In fact, his high-level staff is leaving, and not to his future campaign.)

I havent seen anything yet that says he has done these things.
I HAVE seen insiders comment that Biden team has 'kept it small' so no one will really know, which to me means, he isnt running.

To your first question, he hasn't said he isn't running. He's not acting overwhelmed. He's been touting his accomplishments. He's on an 'infrastructure' tour.

Which 80 yr old believes they're too old? Even Feinstein appears unaware she's too old. How many elderly folk get in auto-wrecks because they are in denial that they can no longer drive. IOW, I don't see any evidence he might believe he is too old.

To your second, why would any of that come before he announces he's running? And I imagine much of that staff is already in place at the top. As for local staff, local offices, lawn signs, bumper stickers, who else including re-run MAGA turd is setting that stuff up already?

True. The elderly tend not admit when they can no longer drive. My grandmother had to hide the car keys from my grandfather because he refused to give up driving. My husband and I refused to let my father-in-law drive whenever we went out together. He finally caused an accident. He had his license suspended until he passed a driving test. He failed it 3 times but passed on the final fourth try. No one who has been driving for decades should fail a driving test. Once he "proved" he could still drive, he actually stopped.

As for Feinstein:
Sen. Dianne Feinstein emerged from the Senate chamber on Wednesday seemingly confused about what she had done during a two-vote series.

"Did I vote for that?" Insider overheard the California Democrat ask her long-time chief of staff, David Grannis, about approving a judicial nominee to the federal bench.

Grannis, who had just finished explaining to his 89-year-old boss that the six Senate votes scheduled throughout the day would be on Biden appointees, shook his head and said, "No."

I agree with this, but that said he needs to announce his decision soon because he's leaving his own party hanging in the balance. I was on the "not running" side early in this thread, but right now I'd say it's 40% running/60% not running and every day the running side goes up by 1%.

Unless a serious health problem comes up for Biden or his wife, I think he'll run. But, not declaring whether he's running again or not also makes sense; a lame duck president doesn't wield as much power because others know he won't have to be dealt with in the next term. It also helps keep Dems in line for the same reason.

Dang, and we were almost in agreement. ;)

This is not the first time the same election ritual has run this same course. If there were a viable candidate in the wings they would not need Biden to declare nearly 2 years out (Feb 2023 to Nov 2024) in order to rise to the top.

It's all a ritual. Think about it. Think about how many times we've all seen this same recording playing again and again? There are only a few variations.

First, Biden is going to run again unless he suffers a medical setback like a stroke or a heart attack. For those of us on the left side of the aisle we really need to stop amplifying the message he is too old unless one has a candidate in mind one wishes to push ahead in the line.

I know I pissed off a few people like @Stacyhs with my opinion some people were amplifying a concerning message about Biden but it is a fact. People are inadvertently amplifying negative messages. And it does matter.

I've not yet had the energy and time to start a thread on amplifying political messages on social media but it's important for folks to take a step back and look at it. There is still time for that thread. I'm not well yet and I have a bit of backed up paperwork that has put that thread on the back burner. I am, however, passionate about this issue.

Well there you go. :fg: :thumbsup:

If the election was in a few months and lasted only a few months, then I'd say Biden could run. But this is a SIX YEARS forward commitment.

It is not happening that way. No way Biden gets through to election day.
The fact that Biden has some good hours/days where he gets through a speech as if it is some major (big hand clap! yay!) accomplishment, is just evidence to me that we have become accustomed to very low expectations.

Polling is ridiculous because it is all about 'celebrity', or rather, 'name recognition'. He needs to bow out soon so someone else can gain larger national awareness.

As I said before, I think he is out by March. The negative articles on him on left-leaning news outlets continue to appear. That did not happen until about 2 months ago.
He is out.
IMO.

Nice of you to pop in to regurgitate the republican party's lies abou Joe Biden's mental state for the rest of us. This is the party of the man who committed treason between 2017 and 2020 when holding office, after all.

To an outsider this seems to be one of the potential flaws in the US system - you are always in one election cycle or another. Here in the UK we seem to be able to organise, run and resolve an election in about a month or two every 5 years or so. It is similar in most European democracies. With elections every 2 years for congress US representatives seem to hardly have time to get their feet under their desks before they are out and campaigning again, and already, 2 years out as you observe, people are declaring runs for the Presidency.

I love how we’re discussing the deteriorating health and mental acuity of a man who not even two weeks ago stood in front of Congress and clowned the entire Republican Party.

I know Biden is old, but some of you need to get a grip.

So we can add treason to the list of legal-related matters that you do not understand.

If it was up to me, anyone announcing they are running, setting up a campaign organisation, or accepting donations any earlier than six months prior to the election would be permanently barred from running for any office whatsoever.

There is pretty much only Johnson in modern times that did not run for a second term. They either got re-elected or shot mostly. That is how divided we are at times. What happened to Ford, though?

I agree. Representatives are really never not campaigning except for maybe the first 6 months after an election. We need to restrict campaigning to the 2 months immediately before the election AND limit how much money can be spent.

He became president when Nixon resigned then ran against Carter and lost.

As president Trump gave aid and comfort to Russia which was, and remains, an enemy foreign nation (or does a country that puts a bounty on your soldiers not count any more?). Working under the ridiculously tight definition of treason in the US constitution, that makes Trump a traitor.

Technically, treason is only applied during times of war. We are not technically at war with Russia. So, legally, that would not make Trump a traitor.
