That's not believable. Even if we seriously call travel tiring (if you're not the driver it's just sitting in a seat while a machine moves you), coming back to the USA in the middle there doesn't save any; it adds more.

For the love of god would people please stop pretending there's anything is remotely left of centre in US politics? There's slightly to the right and extremely to the right, that's it. And please don't say its all relative when commentators constantly compare the US 'left' with socialism and communism.

This is the most common view from outside the US as well. Perhaps inevitable, as democracy was a way-station which newly-acquired mercantile and colonial wealth looked to in order to escape royal whim, not a destination. No surprise the US revolution was a tax revolt by the elite. The 1930s saw the first experiment in then moving wealth away from tax-prone popular will with support for state capitalism as all alternative. But back came royal (dictator) whim, and democracy seemed safer. New generation now, so new testing, with Trump being one such. There will be more. Meanwhile, media deregulation and SCOTUS decisions have made much of voting a moot point entirely, producing just the situation you describe.

Have you read any of the James Burnham Managerial Revolution derived analysis of this? The opening few sentences of your post seemed pure that kind of analysis, it's just that the Burnham school of thought would also apply that to liberalism and progressivism, and indeed any system of rule.

NY Times poll: 64% of Democrats don't want Biden to run again. CNN checks to see if anybody's talking about running against him; no surprise there are no takers at this point.

Watch for governors and a few others to begin to get more face time on TV denouncing Republicans and the Supreme Court. Buttigieg has started up his PAC, although he claims to be focused like a laser on his job as Secretary of Transportation. Gavin Newsom and JB Pritzker have been making noises like future presidential candidates; Newsom even took out an ad in Florida attacking Ron DeSantis.

The tricky part involves Kamala; can Biden bow out without giving the VP his endorsement? She's been impressing absolutely nobody. Harris' camp probably dreams that Biden decides to resign from the presidency after the midterms, but I don't see Biden leaving office before the end of his term unless it's feet-first.

A Power Move by Biden would be to pick a Female running mate (please not Harris) and have her on Spot no.1, and him going back to VP as the Elder Statesman.

I'm having trouble visualizing this. Biden announces that he's running for VP with (say) Amy Klobuchar as his presidential pick? I'm sure she'd appreciate the endorsement, but all the other prospective candidates would not just step aside; it would be full-on open primary time.

Biden doesn't work as #2 anymore. Remember the old bit about the VP being one heartbeat away from the presidency? With Biden as VP the Speaker of the House would be two heartbeats away.

yeah, I guess Pelosi would need to quit, too (finally).
Not sure she is capable of quitting, though.

The drumbeat is getting louder. Michelle Goldberg in the Times:

I can't help feeling very sorry for Joe Biden. He's wanted to be president for most of his life, first running 34 years ago. Had his son Beau not died in 2015, Biden might have entered the Democratic primary then; as vice president …

Kind of a silly what-if, especially considering that Goldberg would have been throwing stones at Biden for trying to deny Hillary her historic nomination. But I suppose her point is that if he had succeeded in 2016 he would be in the homestretch of his presidency instead of still inside the first 600 days and looking for all the world like a millstone around the Democrats' necks as we head towards the midterms.

This is how the dump Joe movement starts, but again it will be interesting to see if there is a push for him to resign before 2024; a whole lot of the arguments people are making against him running are also ones that indicate maybe he shouldn't be in the Oval Office in 2023.

No democrat will be nominated as candidate and then pick Biden as VP. There is no point to do this. It gains nothing. People are tired of...presidents.

I predict a string of one term presidents. Trump started a trend.

Mark Kelly. He is moderate, has swing state appeal and he's a living action figure.

Plus, he has an identical twin and they have both spent a lot of time in space.

That combination will make the Conspiracy Theorists all suffer from Sudden Head Explosion syndrome. Can't vote if your head went all explody. That would deprive the GOP of their most reliable voting bloc.

I find travel quite draining, even when I'm mostly just a passenger.

Yeah, didn't think about that, but if we're going to say that Biden shouldn't run, and Harris is pretty unappealing, we need to come up with a plausible alternative. People are out there. They may not be household names right now, but neither was Carter when he threw his hat in the ring, nor Bill Clinton for that matter. In hindsight it seems obvious but people are bad at predicting the future and we use the availability heuristic. We only consider people who ran last time, for example.

Although traveling in Air Force one seems like it shouldn't be too difficult. Isn't there even a bed for the president and his wife? I know what you mean though. I often fly across the Pacific in coach class, and I have trouble sleeping like that. So I generally don't even try. At least there are movies to watch, to pass the time. But I'm always happy when I'm back on the ground again.

I think one of the most valid criticisms of the Dems these days is there lack of building up a legit bench.

Ya, let's keep repeating the same proven-dead-wrong things that got us into the current mess in the first place. It's bound to get different results sooner or later!

This forum badly needs an immensely useful emoticon I haven't seen since I was at a forum for the TV show "Firefly": not just frowning a bit, but also looking down and slowly turning the head side to side, named ":disappointed:".

Or Obama. Ponder what that means: 100% of the Democrat Presidents since the 1960s have gotten in at first as dark horses. (And I don't know what Carter was like, but the only two to do it in over 40 years also did it running as lefties, not as moderates.)

They haven't just lacked that; they've actively fought against it, treating members of their own party as bigger enemies more in need of fighting/destroying than the other party.
