Will Biden run for the presidency in 2024?

Will Biden run?

My recollection is that a reporter cited an anonymous source who was thought to be a member of Biden's campaign staff. The staffer claimed that Biden had privately stated that he would not run for reelection unless he thought himself healthy enough to run again.

Out flawless 3rd estate quickly turned that into "If elected, Biden promised to only serve one term!"

Now if he does run again they'll claim he's breaking a promise.

To paraphrase an old joke, Biden doesn't have to be extremely popular. Just more popular than the other guy.

Just yesterday there were reports that he's bewildered & dismayed by his lack of popularity, particularly as compared to Trump. That probably makes him less likely to go for it again than he was before.

AOC has some strengths; she starts out with more name recognition than most governors and quite a few senators. She's attractive (for a politician), the media can will play up her Hispanic heritage as historical and her youth as game-changing. She'd obviously need a fairly crowded field to split up the establishment liberal wing, but that would be guaranteed if Biden doesn't run.

Also price in that a debate between her and the rest of the likely candidates would be an absolute bloodbath in her favor. She is a very charismatic highly intelligent and effective communicator way more in touch with the interests of the people than media coverage would lead us to believe. In a battle fought in the media the more establishment candidates can use greater resources to keep that from being a factor. Alone on a stage not so much.

The usual suspects really couldn't handle Bernie, and he was basically easy mode.

Testament to the bubble our political elite live in. It's wild that he would not understand how terribly things, both for him as a politician and generally for the nation, are going right now.

I don't think it's safe to assume AOC would be up there throwing elbows. As much as we need someone to directly confront the rot in the party, most of these progressive or socdem candidates turn out to be much more cuddly team players than the hype lets on.

It isn't about being belligerent. More that she's been way more articulate and clear when, say, cross examining people in house hearings and she's going to stand out among mediocrities.

Her being belligerent would be counterproductive, really. She's going to come off as way smarter than anyone currently in the Democratic pipeline. For whatever reasons she's been portrayed as sort of a dingbat in mass media, and those built in lower expectations will make it far more jarring.

It shouldn't be so surprising. Most politicians and especially those that run for the presidency are a bit to a lot narcissistic. It's got to be confusing to any of them that they aren't especially popular. Add to that the bubble our elites live in and that powerful folks tend to collect sycophants more easily than honest folks and, while, how come we don't all see their greatness?

Edit to add, even though he's never said he won't run, its been a question since 2019. He's super old, he shows his age even more than is almost contemporaries; Warren, Sanders, Clinton, etc. He can't say he won't run because then he's a lame duck and what ever his agenda is, will be even more dead than it is now and his cabinet will all quit to run in 2024.

It was never about liking Joe even in 2020. Every election is about Trump now. Dislike of Trump will only increase. If he runs, only 2 minutes of hearing Trump is enough to decide your vote.

Also the reason you show up to vote. No Trump and the election will be a flop.

The New York Times gives voice to "whispers" from Democrats that Biden needs to pack it in:

To nearly all the Democrats interviewed, the president’s age — 79 now, 82 by the time the winner of the 2024 election is inaugurated — is a deep concern about his political viability. They have watched as a commander in chief who built a reputation for gaffes has repeatedly rattled global diplomacy with unexpected remarks that were later walked back by his White House staff, and as he has sat for fewer interviews than any of his recent predecessors.

“The presidency is a monstrously taxing job and the stark reality is the president would be closer to 90 than 80 at the end of a second term, and that would be a major issue,” said David Axelrod, the chief strategist for Barack Obama’s two winning presidential campaigns.

no argument from me ...

the more turnover the Dems can show in key positions, the more electable they become.

I don't call all of Rump's interviews on Fox to be actual interviews.

Yes, Biden is not as sharp as a younger version. But in no way is he incompetent or senile.

It's too soon to start assessing who should run on the Democratic ticket in 2024.

(cross-post, but it belongs here)
I'm rather amazed at the backlash Don Lemon is getting for questioning Biden's competency. (eta - perhaps "competence isn't the right word" Stamina, maybe?) I wondered about that myself. I'm retired but decades younger than Biden, and I can't imagine working that hard at that age, dealing with the stress, etc. I've certainly been hoping he wouldn't run again but if he's the only shot against Trump (who I don't think will actually be nominated), so be it.

It is just a fact of life..once you get into your 70's your body starts to go and that will have an impact on you mentally..
Foolish to think otherwise.
I, for one, think there should be an upper age limit on being elected tothe presidency, maybe 70, If you are elected when you are 70, you are automatically a one term President.
I could apply it to other positions. Dianne Feinstein never should have ran for relection last time. Just too old.

I am predicting now it will be a three way race in 2024. You will see an Independent enter the race who will be a serious candidate. No idea who, through I could through out some names, but I think it will happen.

Biden should pack it in. Problem is, who would replace him on the ticket? Please, don't say Kamala Harris or Bernie Sanders. Pete Buttigieg is young and somewhat competent, doesn't have much experience but neither did a guy named Obama. But Buttigieg doesn't have much charisma and, unless he changes, is too middle of the road for the left wing of the party. Stacey Abrams has energy and charisma, but unless she is elected governor of Georgia, not much of a track record, but neither did a guy named Obama.

Speaking of which, there's a woman named Obama, Michelle, but I doubt she would want to, however, she is very popular and has lots of charisma, and even though she lacks experience, she's married to a guy who could certainly advise her.

Of course, if Biden runs again, all this is moot, because the party would quash all legitimate challengers.

I can't see Biden running again, particularly as this last time he was able to greatly reduce his travel and appearances due to Covid, but that will not be the case in 2024.
