Well, I'm not a Catholic but I do agree with them about a lot of things, particularly regarding sexual matters. I'm sympathetic to their point of view and I concur that sex is for procreation within a liftime monogamous heterosexual marriage and homosexuality is plain wrong. It is a sin and an abomination.

XenonII, the common understanding is that homosexuality as a matter of fact is not a matter of choice. People are simply born wired to think men are sexy, or women are sexy, or both, and they cannot change that wiring.

If you have read any first-hand accounts of people "coming out", you will have noticed that they never, ever say "I was bored one day and feeling perverse so I thought I'd boink people of the same sex". They always say "As long as I had sexual feelings I thought people of the same sex were hot".

It follows that homosexuality is therefore "natural" and "normal" in the same sense that being left-handed is. It is less common but it's not a moral or physical defect.

If you believe this understanding is mistaken, can you point us to any reliable sources to correct us? Obviously religious sources are not relevant since this is a scientific question.

I've seen these stanzas (wrong word, I know, but my brain just froze up on the right one) before, and I've always wondered how accurate the translation is. For example, I've heard that the first one quoted here can be interpreted as "Don't have sex with a man in the same bed where you have sex with a woman." It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but makes more sense than some other parts of the Bible.

Anyone know what the best translations of these verses are?

When I used to be Christan, I did a study on translations and their origins. I have came to the conclusion that the New American Standard was the closest to the actual Hebrew writings.

Could it be that the reason (some) homosexuals are depressed, alcoholic or suicidal is because of the way that society treats them and alienates them. Try living their lifestyle and see how happy you are.They are not seeking a "special right," but only the same right as all the rest of us, that of choosing anyone we want to marry, provided they are of legal age to decide. Certainly homosexuals can marry anyone of the opposite sex. But they cannot marry anyone of their choosing. By definition, the only people they would want to be married to are those of the opposite sex. So by denying them that right, a right which all of the rest of us take for granted, you are de facto denying them their right to marry whomever they choose. They can choose someone out of the specific group that you say they can choose from, even though there is nobody in that group that they could possibly want to marry.

We are talking about one of the most fundamental and personal decisions we ever make in our lives, that of whom we will choose to share our life with, to share the good and the bad, to share hopes and joys and dreams and sorrows with, to care for each other in sickness and old age, to work together toward shared goals, both emotional and financial. I would not want anybody telling me that I could only choose from a select group of people, none of whom I would want to choose.

The bottom line is: I have yet to have anyone give me a rational explanation for why homosexuality is wrong that doesn't involve religion.
