I watched the followup discussion on the PBS Newshour with David Brooks and Mark Shields. David Brooks gave Hillary the edge in the end but he thought Trump did what he needed to do. I don't think think there were major gaffs such as the Benson Quayle debate. Trump was flailing at the end with his word salads. In the end, Trump's base will say he won and Hillary's base will say she won. Personally, I give Hillary the edge because Trump lost focus after about 20 minutes in. As others pointed out, he did not take the attack to Hillary on the email servers and went off on a tangent. Neither failed abysmally. The other guest on the News Hour ( I don't remember her name) made the best point. She said that since both candidates have strong negatives, they should not have the focus on themselves. Most of the focus was on Trumps issues and this is why I would give Hillary the edge.
My thoughts exactly.

I think Trump did provide some ammunition against himself - "it's called doing business", "it was a small loan", "maybe they did crap work" - for others to use.

The people that do those small sample group of undecided voters said there were two moments that did the most damage to him. The defense of the small loan from daddy as though it something anyone could get and his flailing at answering the birther question. The latter underscored the damage having him in the Fox News protection program did to his ability to communicate to the electorate at large. He was dropping campaign buzzwords without explaining. Just saying, "Sid Blumenthal" means nothing to someone that isn't plugged into your fictional reality for example.

One of the more damaging things for Trump was when he stood by not paying any taxes is being a smart business man. Taking advantage of bankruptcy laws is being a smart business man. Those things don't translate over into being a smart president .Hillary lead him right into that trap and effectively pointed out to those that might believe Trump is right, his tax cuts, only benefit people like Trump and his family, and by not paying taxes, he isn't contributing to the military, veterans, education, infrastructure or anything else but himself. Building America at the expense of the working class.

He also seemed to say it was just good business practice to use the laws of the country to avoid paying contractors for work done. Some champion for small businesses if his motto is "if I can screw you little guys and get away with it then I am a good business man".

Good morning.
Before the debate, the audience was given clear instructions not to react to what the nominees say. No applause, no booing that kind of stuff. The moderator had to remind the audience a couple of times during the debate about that. I don't think the times the audience chose to ignore those instructions had too much of an impact but what exactly could be done if the audience ignored those instructions completely? Could Holt have told them after the first instance that they would pause the debate and clear the room if it happens again?

Notably it was a group of Trump supporters that started it when he brought up the e-mails. They started whooping like Al Bundy had just put his hands down his pants/trousers.

After the debate the same group could be heard loudly yelling how much they loved Trump to him even as he tried to get off the stage quickly to figure out how to spin his self immolation. I suspect those people planned to go off when the emails came up beforehand. After that Hillary's camp simply retaliated in kind when she made good points.

On the whole, the debate was a net positive for Clinton, but as I've said before, setting this up as a prizefight where she would deliver a "knockout" blow is just fanciful. Trump can interrupt, lie and BS, but we've seen all of that before, so let's talk about how he sniffled.

Both of those are items he should have known were likely to be asked. Same thing with the tax return.

Don't be besmirching Al Bundy.

The small-businessman should be a target demographic for Clinton, I think. It would also be great if they boycotted Trump-linked facilities for their conventions : I gather that's an important market for the US hotel business. That wouldn't affect the election but I'd savour any harm done to that odious excuse for a human being.

And how he's snivelling now. Did he really complain about the microphone?

Nothing but a few billion separating Al and Donald.

Useless trophy wife; hawt daughter he'd probably bang if only; idiot but well-meaning son (what's up with Don Jr's face? Chronic constipation?).

Does Donald own a dog?

:p

Notice Donald never mentions his other, more Kelly-like, daughter Tiffany? ;)

Chris Christie.

On Fox this morning:

Unfortunately for me, the only English news I get where I am is Fox. This morning they were spinning like a whirling dervish. According to them Trump was Presidential, showed a great temperament, and really showed what a status quo shill HRC is. Oh, and Lester Holt should be ashamed. They really do live in an alternate reality. Any questions were answered with Trump practically yelling at HRC about his temperament being his biggest asset. Crazy. :boggled:

Good afternoon CapelDodger

Not only is he suggesting that the microphone was intentionally set up to fail for him, he is complaining about the questions Holt asked him and felt that he didn't go ask Clinton about the things Donald Trump wanted him to ask. Last night, Trump had nothing but compliments for the moderator. Birthdays not bad enough, he went on to attack the woman that Hillary mentioned last night.
With no apparent consideration for the political recklessness of his crude comments, Trump once again went after Machado's physical appearance, bringing her up on his own.
"That person was a Miss Universe person, and she was the worst we ever had. The worst. The absolute worst," Trump said. "She gained a massive amount of weight and it was a real problem. We had a real problem."

ETA, I watched the debate and I didn't notice any issues with his microphone. Maybe Ivanka had the ability to switch it off in case he started going on a rant. Microphones on pick up what you say. They don't translate what you say into a coherent message.
