Tricky
Briefly immortal
And why? (I've specifically limited this to painters so it will be apples-to-apples comparisons.)
I was just watching some of the hysteria over on the thread in SInCE about Thomas Kincaid. Wow, people take their art pretty seriously here. I've never been one to get overly excited about art, though I enjoy much of it. Some not so much.
As for me, though, I guess my favorite style is surrelism, and thus, my favorite artist is probably Salvadore Dali. I like my art to look like something, but I don't want it to be boring. Portrait art is slightly interesting, but not so much as something that makes you wonder what was going through his mind when the artist made those images. I can get absorbed in the detail of a Dali work and look at it for hours, trying to figure out what (if anything) he was trying to say. And Yes, I like Roger Dean too.
Other art, especially some kinds of modern art, leave me cold. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would look twice at Mark Rothko, especially the ones that are just a strip or two of color. And frankly, I've never understood why Van Goph is so elevated in lofty art circles. His brushwork looks crude to me. Good, but not great.
Now I'm sure art majors could explain to me why so-and-so is just marvelous and others (like Thomas Kincaid) are crap, but if try to tell me that I have no business liking it or that I am a cultural caveman, then save your breath. I don't care. I like what I like.
