I predict that after President Obama wins re-election there will be internecine warfare within the GOP like we've never seen. I think the pragmatic moderates are going to attempt to reassert themselves, and the Tea Party is going to engage in a fight to the death.

And, it won't bother me if they* do!!! Not a jot, not a whit will I lose sleep over the loss of them all*.

*By all, I refer to the teabaggers and the fundies and those who use them (for political purposes). If they are just playing BDSM games with them as bottoms it's all good. Prag/mods are acceptable though still not at the right place.....

The latest political pundit pondering has the GOP buying into Ron Paul's "get rid of the Fed". Makes sense. Ron Paul has a consistent base of followers. Probably looks like low hanging fruit about now. :D

After the election? They'll impeach 4 justices, put 4 Opus Dei folks in, take person rights from people, and leave it only with corporations

But only after they're born. The only entities left with personhood rights will be corporations and unborn fetuses.

That battle will take place but I think you've painted it too harshly. There have been internecine engagements in the past and nobody fought to the death. Won't happen this cycle either.

There is a serious lack of conservatives in the poll of this thread.

It would be nice t have a bit more diversity there and I'm curious what you think, so please participate.

I'll play the part of a conservative for the purposes of this thread if you wish.....

Mitt Romney will be elected in 2012. As a left wing candidate he wasn't supposed to appeal to the GOP core but rather the undecided middle, this he did successfully. The spectacular success of the U.S. economy under Mitt's leadership (together with a resurgence in U.S. confidence following his repositioning of the U.S. worldwide following four years of Obama weakness) leads to his re-election in 2016. The GOP faithful swallow hard over this but at least his election has allowed 8 years to repair the terrible damage to the economy, morals and religious freedom that have occurred during Obama's tenure.

During the 8 years, the GOP are able to pass a number of critical pieces of legislation to return the U.S. to being what it should have been these last four years, a democratic, capitalist Judeo-Christian country who spends its energy looking after itself rather than trying to fix the problems of the world. They also manage to educate the public to realise that the Democrat Party in general (and Obama in particular) are nothing more than socialist cabal attempting to destroy the American Dream.

During the 8 years of Mitt Romney's glorious leadership, the Democratic Party implodes as the left wingers push for increasingly extreme candidates and the more centrist members drift over to the GOP as they realise how wrong they had been all these years.

By the time 2020 rolls around, the Democratic Party is a completely spent force consisting of a few hippies and communists railing against the fabulous success of the U.S. The re-alignment of public opinion allows the GOP to select a truly representative candidate for election in 2020 they key platform will be:

  • Removal of the obstructions to economic success including the repeal of restrictive environmental and employment legislation
  • Properly grounding the U.S. legal system in the 10 commandments
  • Allowing Christians to teach the truth rather than mere scientific "theories"
  • Reducing the size of goverment to half its current levels

The successful implementation of these policies leads to a new Golden Age of the United States where economic prosperity goes hand in hand with moral rectitude and where people are able once again free to pursue the American Dream.

So, no split if the GOP loses?

This could go both ways. The TP's could split off or the pragmatic centrists could split off.

Probably won't happen because of the electoral system in the US.

I still think that there's a good chance that the GOP will win the election. If the oil price shoots up and voters are paying $5 a gallon to fill their SUVs or if the economy continues to struggle, or even reverses then I can see the voters switching to the GOP.

The two party system in the U.S. and the powerful party machines that support it means that it would be very difficult in this day and age for a third party to establish itself. A splinter party would be setting itself up for years (decades ?) of being unable to wield power at anything other than a local level. Apart from making themselves feel better that they are in a party that closely reflect their views, I cannot see what's in it for the group doing the splintering.

But only after they're born. The only entities left with personhood rights will be corporations and unborn fetuses.

In fact, unborn fetuses will be considered to be a corporation in themselves, and all their shares of the corporation will be put in a blind trust and the profits directed to the president's Cayman Islands accounts. As soon as they're born, the fetus is out of the corporation and forfeits its shares.

I agree.

The assumption of the GOP losing was for sake of discussion.

Every election I'm amazed how the US seems split down the middle.

Recent polls show that well over 70% Europeans would vote Obama.
I have hard time understanding why people would vote for the current GOP, let alone Romney.

Guns, God, n' Gays.

ETA: None of which have any relevance whatsoever to any of the current issues the US faces, but ignorance and fear knows no "rational".
