There is a serious lack of conservatives in the poll of this thread.

It would be nice t have a bit more diversity there and I'm curious what you think, so please participate.

Romney is a terrible candidate IMHO, the current GOP platform isn't very convincing (not out of Romney's mouth anyway), so for the sake of argument, I'll assume that Obama wins.

The party seems terribly split, and the fractions strongly ideological and unwilling to compromise.

Will they be able to pull the party more to the middle and regain the swing voters? Or will such an attempt cause the party to actually split?

Is there a conservative waiting in the wings with enough charisma to keep the party together and lead it back to success?

yes he is, BUT, he was the only one out there who made any effort not to be moonbat insane, and if he is the best the repugnicans they're screwed....

Actually, an Obama victory is a victory for a moderately right, moderate candidate over a candidate who wants to go back to the dark ages, literally, with the corporation replacing the Catholic church.

I take it from your attitude that you wish to go back to the times before science and engineering, and see 99% of humanity live in squalor and misery.

Suggesting that Obama is "liberal" is so very obviously dishonest as to utterly indict the liar who called him a "liberal". Obama is rather to the right of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Was Eisenhower a communist, then?

Of course. Remember Nixon trying to defect to red china?

Social conservatism is a troglodytes ideology with no redeeming value. Republicans are really betting the barn if they think "values voters" will win elections forever.

I think the Republican party could capture a large chunk of the center if they could just ditch the social conservatism entirely. Democrats would be unstoppable if they could win a large fraction of economic centrists.

It all depends on what we mean by conservative. Do we mean someone who wants to temper change slowly or hard right anarco capitalism?

Remind me again: who won at the end of that story?

Exactly the point. And how many years and how much conflict did it take for that to happen?

(I'm a registered Republican, BTW- and have been most of my life- who has stuck around so I can vote against the TPers and other social conservatives in the primaries. I'm also voting for Obama.)

The Disney corporation, not the Japanese studio from whom they stole the movie, including even particular shots, not just plot and characters. It's one of the most outrageous intellectual property thefts in modern history, and they got away with it.

Until Citizens United gets overturned the lunatic corporatist Ayn Rand fringe stands a decent chance in every election.

I predict that after President Obama wins re-election there will be internecine warfare within the GOP like we've never seen. I think the pragmatic moderates are going to attempt to reassert themselves, and the Tea Party is going to engage in a fight to the death.

While I would like to see that happen because it would perhaps bring back the GOP that I used to be a part of... I doubt it will go down that way.

The main issue with the GOP (and the nation frankly) was depicted in the photo a few post up, bombastic conservative talking heads.

There was a time when the fringe ideas in our society were relegated to street corners and backrooms. They were seen by the general public as rambled whisperings from the lunatic fringe.

JFK was viewed with great suspicion by a large segment of the opposing party but could you imagine people showing up at rallies with images of him dressed in a Nazi uniform like the Tea Party depicted Obama as Osama bin Laden (or Hitler but bin Laden is a better analogy due to the time period between events)?

The fringe now has a voice and credibility which encourages behavior that would have been all but unthinkable before the onset of the 24 hour news cycle and over the top commentary.

These people like Limbaugh and Beck are never going away because they are making too much money and until they go away the fringe will be acceptable.

I don't think the Tea Party is going anywhere, I think the GOP is going to keep going further and further to the right and the left is going to keep gradually moving in the same direction. The left of today is the right of 30 years ago. People often make the argument that Reagan would never stand a chance in today's GOP. What they often overlook is that, in many ways, he would fit in well with the modern Democratic party... that should be an eye opener for people on both sides.

After the election? They'll impeach 4 justices, put 4 Opus Dei folks in, take person rights from people, and leave it only with corporations and then start serving soylent green...
Oh, wait. never mind.
