What's wrong with what Russia's doing?

I think it was pretty obvious back in 2014. I can kind of cut Delvo some slack for thinking maybe Ukraine had a corrupt neo-Nazi regime that was horribly oppressing ethnic Russians, and that Something Needed to be Done. So I don't really fault him for starting the thread without 20/20 hindsight. But come on. Putin's nature wasn't that well obfuscated, even then.

And really? Even if Ukraine's government in 2014 was a corrupt ultranationalist regime that needed changing, Delvo thinks Vladimir Putin is a good solution? Just the fact that it was Russia that was doing it should have been enough to figure out that it was probably the wrong thing to do.

In your hypothetical wouldn't Canada still have the right to defend its legally recognized borders?
I'm liking where this is going...

We (the US) should take British Columbia, or at the least... a swath from the coast to say 50 miles inland of the Can-Am highway.
Just precautionary you understand.

:D

It is important to note that when Russian politicians say "Nazi" they mean "people opposed to what the Russian Government is doing".
There is no history or ideology here, just a term to identify The Enemy with embedded justification to do whatever to them.

There definitely is history and ideology here. It is just a willful perversion of the facts.

The first page of this thread sure did age like milk.
Saw the thread title and came to post the same.
I actually like how the thread has gone.
  • Original poster with less information at the time than we have now asked why other people seemed to think differently
  • Question was answered
  • Information was given to support the answers
  • Original poster took in new information & adjusted conclusions accordingly instead of insisting on fighting just to fight
This is exactly how reasonable discussion among reasonable people being reasonable is supposed to go.

Except...

Nothing like that has anything to do with the original subject of this thread. The story Russia was using back then was about protecting Russians in part of Ukraine which had become dangerous, not about comparisons of which tyrant is more tyranty. That's one of the stories Russia's using now. (If I'd heard anything like that back then, I wouldn't have had any questions about what's wrong with it.)
