Being a Middle Ager is best, there's nothing you NEED to recover from.

Hi Kataleena, welcome! I speak as a fellow escapee from the new age coercion silently imposed by "peers".

And respect to you for having the guts to shake off the mob mind of the "new age" gang... hard to do if all your friends are on the boat floating down that stream! So much easier to just go along for a peaceful life... it takes a strong mind to throw your whole life into a new beginning.

You are making profound demands on yourself. Lots of people here on JREF can and will help you if you need information and or support. Well done for finding your way here.

Lightness of heart and freedom of mind await you! If you stick with "us", you will eventually discard all need for keeping any aspect of "supernatural" or "paranormal" interpretations of any experience. Personal experiences can be misinterpreted, so whatever you believe has happened to make you still allow any credence to nonscientific interpretations, I hope you will be able to accept the understanding that the mind is a very powerful "organ", but it's powers are entirely limited to it's physical connections within your own system... and then only subject to the laws of physics.

Keep learning. Be well. :):D

Hi there. I use to be into the New Agey stuff but I eventually started thinking/feeling like the whole stuff was a load of poo.

I actually heard about JREF and the forums when I had ran into the Stop Sylvia Browne site (though I never thought of joining the forum at the time until recently). Yeah, I was into Sylvia Browne too but not very heavily. I just thought she was neat and the psychic thing kinda intrigued me, which I guess it would for anyone.

Since running into that site, I've been having a hard time in taking her seriously anymore. ... Actually, that might've been what got me into thinking that maybe the whole new agey stuff was a load of poo to begin with.

So I do give thanks to Robert for that. His site seemed to help me start to look at things in a different way.

And perhaps that's why I'm here, to work on that a little better (as I am a little gullible, hah).

I do hope I find this place enjoyable! :)

I didn't think I would be typing that much, whoops.

Hello all. I never know what to say in these things. I think I found you guys via Rationalwiki (same account name), if that tells you anything about me.

Nope. Not a thing. I don't get out much. I do lurk at Atheism Plus, so I have to tell you that we have no homework for you.... Basket O' Links or the like. But if you didn't read the MA you signed (who does?) and actually want to know what to watch for here, you could go to Forum Management and/or Member Help (same general area down at the bottom of the main index page) and figure it out.

The essentials:

No swearing. That ************* James Randi doesn't like it. He wants this forum available for schools and the Censorship Police will shut him out of library searches if there's even a hint of swearing.

Address the argument, not the arguer. "That evidence is crap..." as opposed to "Wow, you're really an idiot!"

Avoid ad hom attacks. By law (the MA), you cannot attack fellow members. But non-members? Well, if you wish,... go at 'em. In short, "Barack Obama is an idiot" is acceptable, while "Foolmewunz is a jerk" is not.

Stay on topic. Thread drift is expected, somewhat. Total derails are generally frowned upon. (You can always report your own post and ask that it be spun off to a new thread, or you can just tell the people you're chatting with in the thread that you realize it's off-topic and want to start a new thread... and do so.

Everyone is required, during their first week of membership to notice how adorable my son (in my avatar) is.

There are a whole bunch of sections for Members Only. Rules are a little looser there and we are actually a bit of a community, so feel free to wade into any old discussion in Forum Community, Sports, Humor (and we use the term in the loosest sense of the word), etc... There are threads there designed to RATCHET UP YOUR POST COUNT, because you need fifteen posts to be allowed to post links (that's an anti-spam measure) and fifty posts to get a cool avatar and to be allowed to put up a "signature".

Other than that, as we told Mrs. Robinson, "Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home." There will be shuffleboard at 4 on the Lido Deck.

(And if you'd like to see OUR reaction to that other forum you just joined, check out the thread in Religion on Atheism Plus and FTB. It's some amazing reading. And no, I'm not stalking you [although that's an attractive shirt you're wearing], but I lurk over there to see what new and exciting parsing of the language they can come up with today.)

Welcome aboard.

Asydhouse, thanks for the welcome! Yes, a new mindset is a bit difficult right now. While unfortunate that you've had the same experience as me (and many others on this site), I appreciate the support. I don't feel so alone anymore.

Lokadyne and Hamilton, welcome, from another fellow newbie!

Foolmewunz, your posts are awesome, love the humor...your son is absolutely the cutest!

Hello, everyone!

I never know what to put on these things. I'm a cool guy who likes to hang out. I can play you the ukulele, and like long walks on the beach.

On our first date, I'll probably take you somewhere romantic. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Hi, I'm contestant number two.

I'm a middle-aged guy who spends way too much time on the internet and likes to argue with people who express beliefs in the usual kinds of stuff they hold true while contradicted by or unsupported by evidence.

On our first date we'll have to take your car or split on a cab because I don't have a current licence or driven in ages.

:D

Welcome, Homeapathy. I like the handle. :)

Nice name. How many people are going to read that firs a as an o? You could be in for some lovely confusion. (Unless, of course, you're marginally literate and simply mis-spelled homeopathy. :p )

Welcome aboard. I'm doing greeter's duty this afternoon because I'm baking a carrot cake and filling time between checking the layers and deciding when to do the icing (cream cheese/buttercream, of course). It'll be ready about five o'clock, so drop in if you'd like to try a slice. You just go to the corner, take a left at the BP station, and drive 9000 km. Can't miss us. We're the only coffee house with a black-and-white motif.

I'll take a bowl of just the icing, please. Maybe with some cocoa mixed in?

Coming right up, ma'am! I should warn you, though - although I'm an American, the first commandment of the FSM is "Thou Shall Not Use Herhey's Cocoa".

Once I got onto Van Houten, I've never gone back. And it's easier to find over here, which is a major bonus. Hershey's is excellent, but it's Dutch Processed, ironically. Van Houten is originally Dutch (now Swiss HQ) but they don't use the "Dutch Process". I make a chocolate gelato that is to die for, and have sold, by word of mouth, about 65 whole double chocolate cakes. They're all awesome because of the cocoa, I feel. I'll never go back to melting down block chocolate again.

Hello everyone.

Found the site a couple of weeks ago. Hoping to be able to contribute meaningfully, you may have to put up with some lame puns and weak humour along the way though...:)

Cheers then!

Hello everyone.

I'm not even close to everyone, but hello, right back atcha!

I've been hoping to contribute meaningfully for years, but it just never seems to happen. Lame puns and weak humour is the best I've ever managed, so you're starting from a good place, as far as I can see.

Cheers then!

And you. Welcome aboard!

Really, if you poke around forum humor, you'll start to suspect that lame puns are considered de rigueur here.

Hi, all. Not much to say. I've lurked around here a few times before, but after watching several of Mr. Randi's videos on YouTube tonight — not the least compelling of which was the "Secrets of the Psychics" documentary — I can't help but admire his efforts and life's work and wanted to be a part of the community.

Speaking of YouTube, I'm also a huge fan of the Explain It All Brothers, a.k.a. QualiaSoup and TherminTrees. They have a similar sort of approach, although their deconstructions and presentations are largely illustrated and scored. Brilliantly, though, I might add.

Anyway, so that's why I'm here. I like getting to the bottom of things and understanding things. I also like discussing things and being able to explain and express my stance in an educated manner. I've always felt weak at debate and I'm hoping I can get better.

Not that I can't be relaxed and just have fun, casual chats, of course! =P But, again, I do like me some long-winded, deep back-and-forth.
