VP Debate Thread

In his original statement, I thought he came down solidly for it. However, when he responded to her remarks on it, he made it clear Obama/Biden don't support gay marriage.

Yeah, I know, that surprised me a little, but then, not really. "He's for Gay marriage" would be a sound byte that would truly energize the far-right base, a lot of which don't really like McCain and might sit this one out. Instead, he took the "safety in semantics" refuge. Politically wise, but I sure would have respected him/them more if they'd just come out and said they support same-sex marriage.

I didn't hear Biden say a single thing about "more drilling". The only thing he mentioned was that no new oil could be brought on-line for ten years (which may be an underestimation). Instead he hammered on alternative energy and how McCain had voted against it. (I'll need some fact-checking on that.)

But I'm happy to let all our oil go undrilled, or at least unproduced. "Burn theirs first, save ours for later" is my motto. We don't have nearly enough energy to compensate for our imports anyway. All that "drill-baby-drill" would do is hasten the day when we are 100% dependent on foreign sources of petrochemicals.

We could break this off into a different discussion. However, with the current trends in vehicle design and fuel consumption, it would be nice to increase the percentage of domestic source as a part of that reduced demand. I don't think its nearly as simple as "burn theirs first".

However, Obama caved on drilling this summer and I haven't heard him go back on that decision yet so as far as I know he is pro-drilling at the moment.

Maybe I missed it or maybe I misinterpreted what I saw, but I'm surprised no one has called out Biden when he choked up over almost losing one of his family.

Were it me sitting between the two, I'd say, "Governor, Senator, we're not moving on until you answer the question directly. It's a simple process, no need to gum it up. I ask something, you answer. Capiche?"

C'mon, admit it would be cool to hear a moderator use the word capiche.

I am all for gay marriage and I find the lack of a candidate who will stand up for it disappointing. I felt like Biden went out of his way to distance their ticket from it when he was allowed to respond to Palin. It wasn't so much not explicitly supporting as running away from it at full steam that got to me.

I mentioned it: "Kitchentablegate"

It happened somewhere between these lines:

Biden: "But the notion that somehow, because I'm a man, I don't know what it's like to raise two kids alone, I don't know what it's like to have a child you're not sure is going to -- is going to make it -- I understand.
I understand, as well as, with all due respect, the governor or anybody else, what it's like for those people sitting around that kitchen table. And guess what? They're looking for help. They're looking for help. They're not looking for more of the same."

"Called out"

He is an emotional guy, he has choked up on that point before. Is this BAD? He lost his family members and we are supposed to call him on the carpet for it?

I think we should call Palin out for sticking to her "Talking Points" and talking about what a maverick John McCain was directly after her opponent almost lost it on national TV talking about his lost family.

Corplinx:
"I leaned towards Obama/Biden however on social issues until tonight. I apparently was under the incorrect assumption that the Obama-Biden ticket supported ending the discrimination against gays who want to marry. I consider it the last big legal discrimination."

Yes, such an important issue to you that you had no idea what position Obama-Biden had taken on the issue. You're so full of crap.

I didn't offer my opinion, I don't care, but considering how some people went nuts when H. Clinton got emotional, I expect some morons to do the same with him.

My opinion on the debate is there is only one VP candidate I want a heart beat away from the being the president and gosh darn, by golly, dog gone it, it aint Palin.

That folksy crap got so thick I was about to puke.

I thought that answer was his best moment.

I noticed Biden repeatedly saying "John" for McCain, as Obama did.. is this a strategy of some kind? To lower his importance? To personalize things? I don't think Biden said "McCain" once. Just "John". Any clues?

I thought she held her own for the most part. I suspect this will have little to no impact on the direction things have been moving on the polls; either staying about the same gap, or continuing to open steadly for Obama. She could blow it for McCain, but I don't think she could have ever moved him up really. It was her's to lose.

Very good point, I had not thought of that.

I completely agree, that stuff was just completely ridiculous....

So anyone know how the "non answers" that Palin answered with are playing with the media so far?

I am hearing a lot of complaining about that but I am Tivo'ed so I can't switch around to other channels.

Maybe it's because they've both been in the Senate for a frightening number of years and he's grown accustomed to calling him by his first name.

So much of this is calculated, I don't think we'll ever know for sure, but my opinion is the three of them know each other, especially Biden and McCain and I suspect it just reflects how long and how well they worked together.

Parsing it, I think it means they support civil unions. Support for gay "marraige" is not a winning political issue.

Personally, I don't care whether you call it "marraige," "civil unions" or some other word. It's just a linguistic distinction. As long as the rights are the same.

I realize that some people do care, but they have to change the culture first before it's safe for politicians to follow. Politicians' top priority is getting ellected and reelected. That's democracy for better or worse.

I had taken Obama's position on the issue for granted after seeing him dance with Ellen and chastise black churches for discriminating against gays. I had never actually gone to his website to research his stance.

My bad.

I've never been to McCain's website either. Personally, I find going to a candidate's website to be about as valuable as going to Ford's web site to find out if their cars are good.
