VP Debate Thread

If they idea is to show people that you can think and chew gum at the same time, I would say that Biden kicked her butt.

Both of them are relying heavily on sound bytes, but Palin is less adept at varying the wording of those sound bytes. She did sound heavily coached. I know I'm prejudiced, but I think that most people who pay attention to the issues will realize that Biden smashed her. He came closer to addressing the questions. Whether or not his facts were correct, he sounded more confident of them.

Yeah, she did a good job of portraying herself as an outsider. She really is. She hasn't got a clue about Washinton, and she seems proud of it. Well, it might work.

Biden did a great job. Palin needs to stop avoiding tough questions.

She need's to stop dodging an issue while adding an empty "mavericks" or "also greed on Wallstreet" line.

Oh, and we now have an official Palin smiley:

;)

No, I love it. I love the way America is the best at everything in the world, and teaches all us people who aren't American the best way we can live our lives.

:D

Yes, I can imagine how it must sound to foreigners. I'm afraid that there's a certain domestic audience that loves that stuff though.

Yes, he did by actually addressing the issues. Someone in another
thread said "Empty Dress" referring to Palin. I guess that phrase fits
best. She didn't said anything that seemed to be coming out of her
own heart or mind.

THAT was the debate talking point from her handlers. They know, she knows, I know, the world knows at this point that she doesn't have the deep answers so deflect, deflect, deflect.

Hummm....

I am watching this on Tivo and I am just getting to the end. I think she just starts to fall apart here at the very end here when she started talking about the VeeP responsibilities.

Oh, my. Cain blogs the debate.

Too much of this Alaska ********. And what's up with the darn it, doggone it, aw shucks, say it ain't so, Joe, arctic hick talk? Hockey moms? Joe six-pack?

"The ultimate bridge to nowhere" -- Biden's pre-canned line, which got a (predictable) laugh, when it should have received a groan. At least he had good timing.

"How long have I been at this... five weeks?"

She didn't answer the questions.

He called her "Sarah Palin" then revised himself, "Gov. Palin." He's obligated to call her governor.

"Um... your plan is a white flag of surrender in Iraq." Whoa.

They hate us for our freedoms?

Did anybody else get a tremble when she mentioned a "McCain/Palin administration"

Pointing fingers, playing the blame game.

The Shia extremists? What'd she say? I was typing. Bitch.

Look at how she says "of course."

Of course we know what a vice president does. Presides over the Senate?? Her main things are energy independence, working with families, and fighting corruption. The Constitution might give the Vice President more power?

Her dad is a school teacher. Her brother is the best school teacher. Shout out to the third graders! Oh, please shoot me. She has a myspace account. I swear she does. She already uses Yahoo mail! Whore.

Palin is doing a whole lot better than people assumed she would do going into this. I honestly think that she is doing a pretty good job all in all.

That said.

If her expectations were not as low as they were, I think Biden is edging out a close debate (well maybe not that close... there is a lot of side bars to her answers) but, again, knowing the low expectations, I question how this will play out with "Joe Sixpack" (Palin's words).

Another thing... she is doing a GREAT job of dodging questions. I don't know how that will play out with viewers but she is really not going deep with any answers.

Also, I have never seen a debater look more coached. That doesn't mean she isn't making a stand on stage, that just means I can SEE the flashcards in her eyes as she is answering.
I thought she did well, even managed to get Biden on the defensive a couple of times (though he parried it well). I think Biden did better, but Palin did make sure all her time was spent getting her message out. The shot at the news media was probably a slip though.

I think its prejudice. I heard them both dodging the issues.

When he was asked what he would cut back on in the face of the economic crisis, he answered "I won't pass McCain's agenda".

I think if you are really up on the issues, neither of these guys really impressed you.

They seem like clones. Both want lower taxes, both are against gay marriage, both want a bailout. Like the last debate, the differences in the issues seem to be style and nuance.

Palin was better than expected, but that was to be expected :-P

But she needed to deliver a knockout punch if she hoped to change the course of the campaign, and it just didn't happened. Biden was pretty good, and she never managed to control the debate. She tried to paint herself and McCain as the real agent for Change, but I don't think it's a strategy that the electorate will buy.

I don't think there will be any change in the polls.

And the winner is once again the moderator.

Started out too talky with those trying to roll 3 questions into one lines. Got better.

Boring, lots of lies from both candidates. Biden did a good job calling out Palin on her hyperbole. Palin and McCain both get negative points for letting Biden and Obama portray generic business tax cuts as cuts for the oil companies.

Biden played fairly safe got in a couple of digs in at McCain and a few knocks a Palin. As well as produceing a rather large amount of numbers. Not sure bringing up his family was a good move. No knockout blows though.

Palin fielded well got in a few counter shots but that fokesy soccer mom bit had better play well with someone otherwise just cringe worthy. Slightly too obvious jumping from sound byte to soundbyte.

Did anyone else notice Biden exhaling loudly through his nose into the microphone?

This is the end. Palin has done all she ever will for the McCain campaign, and it's not enough. She went up there and performed reasonably competently. She provided all the answers which will energize her base, while Biden gave rational, logical points with a minimum of fuss.

Problem is, Biden's base is already energized by two deeply polarizing personalities. He managed to come off much more experienced, which I think will play well, and Palin fed h her base its scraps (The ones who are angry about "those who believe in statistics over testimonials of honest men of good character") but it's not enough.

After seeing this, it's reasonably obvious. President Obama will be leading our nation in 2009, and I will bet on that. The usual suspects (like Brainsty, Whiplashed and B.A.C.) will proclaim that Palin somehow won by exceeding low expectations (she didn't wet herself, which is about the only way she could have come off worse than she has in the interviews) but the fact of the matter is, barring a revalation that Obama is a drug addict or McCain secretly traveled in time and rescued Jesus Christ, Plato, and our Camelot just to get the best advisers possible, we're through.

I agree and I hope we are right (I admit my own bias that may be reflected in the rest of my reply).

:D

I didn't see a game changer here other than this might stop the slide Palin is on in opinion polls. I don't think it completely wipes out the Couric interviews, that will play for a while, but it does probably put a finger in one hole on the side of a damn that has many holes.

The real winner in this debate was Tina Fey - just imagine the material she can mine, from the hair twitch in the beginning to the not answering of questions. What a contrast to Biden, who was serious and on point. A lot of humor here.

Joe has the advantage of being able to cite work he's done directly for this country. When Palin thought she landed some hits on stuff Biden or Obama voted for or against, he shot back that McCain voted the same way.

So what was the best gaffe?

I think it was "Who wants to wipe off the face of the Earth", which is the
factually wrongest thing I heard in the whole debate.
