A senior Vatican cleric has defended the excommunication in Brazil of the mother and doctors of a young girl who had an abortion with their help.

The nine-year-old had conceived twins after alleged abuse by her stepfather.

Riiiiiiigghhhttt.... so, the Vatican says it's OK to pronounce excommunication on the child's mother and the doctors who were saving the child's life and health. But not a word about the rapist scum who abused her.

I guess some priests are able to understand the temptation for raping children, but not a single one will ever in a million years understand what it's like to be pregnant or female.

I've mentioned my general dislike for abortions before. This is certainly a case I have little trouble with. I say "little trouble" because while I still dislike the idea, I like the idea of a 9 year old mother less.

Question for those wise in the ways of the Vatican, can these people ask for forgiveness or something, and be brought back into the fold, as it were? Since those excommunicated priest were re-communicated (?) recently, I assume there is something they can do to "right their wrong".

Just idle curiosity.

If she is pardoned because of the rape, why are the doctors and her mother still excommunicated? Either abortion for rape is justified, or it isn't.

As I understand it, abortion is not OK under any condition, per the Church.

Well, most Catholics I've known would consider it a very bad thing to be excommunicated. I suspect most would do whatever required to get back in the good graces of the Church. But that's just a guess.

I was taking the RCIA classes (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) which is required for all non-Christian converts to Catholicism. I asked the director how one becomes "un-excommunicated". She told me that if the excommunication involved heresy, a public statement of a number of creeds is required, along with a resolve of obedience to the Church and "all that she teaches". All of this is a formal rite in the Catholic Church that actually occurs inside of a parish building usually followed by the Mass. She said it's typically Bishops who lift excommunications regarding sin (such as abortion) whereas the Pope usually lifts the excommunication of heretics. The Pope also has the authority to posthumously lift excommunications as he did with Galileo, and as the current Pope is thinking of doing with Martin Luther (or so says rumor).

I'll try Googling something definitive.

The church excommunicates for birth control use as well. That's the one that started my Mom going off the reservation. Four was enough.

It should be noted as well that South American catholics have spearheaded the conservative backlash after Vatican II.

I think the "logic" is that she is not responsible for the abortion because of her age not that the abortion is justified because of her age.

I'm with you! I was baptised and confirmed, and although I have had nothing to do with the church since about age 13, I think I would be still "on their books".
