US vs everyone else tradewars

Dontcha kinda feel sorry for the poor sods who are tasked with actually collecting tarriffs due on today's imports, when you might know what Trump delcared the rate to be yesterday but might change it again today? And who probably had 2/3 of their department laid off by Musk!

But tariffs have been paused for ...[counts]... another 85 days. So they are collecting a total of ...[counts]... nothing? Zero? No tariff income at all?

Well that's what was said yesterday. Tomorrow all tariffs could be in force, or maybe some, who knows ?

It's the Calvinball of international trade theory.

edited to add.....

This is what came up in the AI answer when I Googled Calvinball

Calvinball, in the context of the "Calvin and Hobbes" cartoon, is a game with no fixed rules, where the rules are constantly made up and can be changed on the fly. It's a game about the game, where the focus is on manipulating the rules to achieve victory, rather than following a set of established rules

I don't think I've seen a more concise or accurate summary of Trump's position on tariffs - except I don't think he knows what victory looks like.

For Trump, victory for him is you losing.

If this is true, Chinese airlines are going to hit problems pretty quickly keeping their Boeing airliners serviced and flying.

So 182 out of Air Chinas fleet of 499 'might' have some problems (considering they have already retired a huge number of their Boeing fleet after the 737 debacle- already half its former size...)

And thats assuming that Boeing even continues to exist- without huge government handouts in the US, they would have folded years ago...

I don't know how many US planes Chinese airlines operate but I had a look at Boeing 777 operators and over 100 of that model seem to be in use by various Chinese operators. I would expect them to begin coming out of service fairly quickly if the operators can't buy service parts.

<edit> Looks like between the biggest 3 operators (Air China, China Eastern and China Southern airlines) they have over 570 Boeings in service. Over 30% of their fleets.

Are parts available from non-US companies ?

Have they already been reverse engineered in China and are ready to start production ?

Doubtful. They can make the parts. Quite possibly to a higher standard than Boeing or it's contractors.

Yes. The Chinese government is capable of planning beyond tomorrow.

The Trump Tantrum Tax is going to damage USAia far more than China.

China seems to be upping the ante in the trade war.

China has warned it will hit back at countries that make deals with the US that hurt Beijing's interests, as the trade war between the world's two biggest economies threatens to drag in other nations.
