UK - Election 2015

My trip to the polling station may not be typical. We walked across fields, through a couple of woods, and up a quiet lane. We saw no cars, but saw a fox, 3 roe deer, 2 dead moorhen chicks, 3 buzzards, a jay, a few squirrels, 5 hares, and heard our first cuckoo of the year. The polling station was empty bar the officers and us.

Sounds idyllic - I hope you've voted to keep those filthy foreigners from spoiling your beautiful corner of En-ger-land * :D:D:p

* - Yes I do recall where you originally came from

Blimey, it's today, isn't it?

None of them are inspiring. There's certainly no party that represents my views that the tax burden is way too low but then again I'm a lefty at heart.

It might have to be green. I've been terribly remiss and not done any proper research.

This website provides a way to compare policies in the parties' own words. Mrs Don found it illuminating and useful.

Where do you get the policies from?

The policies come from the 2015 manifestos of each political party - and in their own words. We take up to eight policy points (in the priority in which they appear in the manifesto) for each of the 10 issue areas, and send them to the political parties for approval.

I am shocked to find discussion continuing on this thread. Ladies and gentlemen, this is polling day. Kindly desist. Otherwise one of us might persuade another and decisively affect the result.

Not me, as our postal vote never did show up. If you hear of a postal-voting scandal in the Somerton & Frome constituency ...

I've just cast my vote, and am delighted to finally find myself in an electorate that isn't a safe seat.

Unfortunately I had to choose between a very good sitting MP, and my preferred party. In the end I went for the party. I miss being able to support a good local MP, while supporting a preferred party as per MMP in NZ.

According to the Daily Mail, one in four voters has yet to decide. This was confirmed in a straw poll taken just now of the girl (Serena) who delivers our sandwiches, yoghurt etc in a van every day. She has yet to make her mind up even at this late hour.

I am not sure how to take this. Assuming a turnout of 70% (say) does it mean the 70% who are voting include a quarter who have not made their minds up and the 30% who are not voting include three quarters who have made their minds up but aren't voting? :boggled: 'I have decided to not vote Conservative'. "I shall not be voting Labour'. 'I have not made my mind up who not to vote for'.

In the Netherlands, we have had a court case about selfies, and the judge allowed them.

I bet the fox voted Labour (anti-hunting) and the buzzards are connected in some mysteriously unfathomable way with the dead moorhens.
Wouldn't he vote Greens then?

Just for fun, I also took the survey. I must say it's very time consuming, and it's hard to compare policies. For instance, there was only one party advocating "dignity in dying". I'd like to know every party's stance towards euthanasia to be able to compare the election programmes. By contrast, the Dutch "election guide" sites typically give you 50 yes/no questions and then present how well it matches to the various parties.

(the euthanasia is just an example, not that my vote would depend on it).

As Damien, I took up residence at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital and my results were:
40% Scottish Greens
40% SNP
20% LibDem
I'm not surprised about the first two, but a bit about the latter. In particular, my preferred choice for the topic Environment was LibDem.

And while we're at it, my totally unscientific guess at the election results:
Conservative: 280
Labour: 267
SNP: 56
and then the rest doesn't matter as you can only build a working majority with the SNP (provided Sinn Fein gets 5 seats and continues to refuse to swear in). For the rest:
LibDem: 19
UKIP: 5
Plaid: 3
Green: 1
Galloway: 1

Prediction:

Due to tactical voting in England both the Tories and Labour are within reach of an overall majority with SNP support.
Cue apoplexy and exploding heads across the media/political landscape as the experts and politicos who explained why Scotland couldn’t/shouldn’t leave the Union come to terms with the unfairness of it all.

Mirth all round and much talk of the constitution.

Matters made worse when it is revealed that the latest Royal baby is black but that this info was withheld to suppress the UKIP vote.

:D No, I voted to keep those nasty bigots from spoiling my little corner of England, or anywhere else. My vote cancels out the uKipper vote from the old lady up the road who runs the riding stable, who is voting for them because her godson is a Ukip candidate somewhere.

.......
And while we're at it, my totally unscientific guess at the election results:
......
UKIP: 5.......

I'd be astonished. Utterly amazed. In fact, I'll have a little bet with you if you like. How about an avatar bet? You get to choose my avatar for a week if you win, and vice versa?

Er, Mike - your avatar is already a dung beetle rolling a piece of crap so that's not much of a bet ..

For those intending to stay up late, The Grauniad has a handy timetable of when we can expect results from the 'important' seats. http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2015/may/07/election-2015-a-guide-to-results-night

I have been to vote - 3 ballot papers as we have town and parish councillor elections too. Business was brisk with a short queue to use one of the four booths, and I popped to the local shop on the way back which meant driving past another polling station, where there was a queue for the car park. This is a relatively safe Labour seat so I am pleasantly surprised by the apparently high turnout.

You think 5 UKIP MPs is too low or too high? You must choose one way, otherwise the bet is too slanted IMHO. (I have a feeling you think it's too high).

But either way I accept the avatar bet.

Also linked from that Guardian article is a full list of seats and expected time of declaration: http://election.pressassociation.com/Declaration_times/general_2015_by_time.php

I hope the 3am time for my constituency is accurate, as I reckon I'll be fading fast by then.
