UK - Election 2015

I can't help wondering if the SNP might get caught in a '92 and end up not doing as well as people predict. I doubt they will do badly but I wouldn't be surprised if Labour hold onto a few seats because of the fear of a Tory government getting to people in the booths.

Could be interesting if that happens and Labour were in a position to still need a bit of help forming a government.

(Of course it would not be a shocker if I am totally wrong...ho hum).

Could be interesting. If Labour needs a little help then it wouldn't be beyond reason to assume that they'd turn to the LibDems rather than the SNP. To take SNP support would involve a great deal of loss of face for Ed Miliband. Of course if Labour (and the other national parties) hadn't alienated the Scottish electorate then they wouldn't be in that position. They have only themselves to blame IMO.

You also knocked us out of the World Cup qualifiers in 1994 when Koeman should have been sent off but ended up scoring from a free-kick a minute or two later.
You've been reading the Daily Mail again? I had no idea you had a turnip for a coach, no wonder you didn't make the qualifiers.

The best bit of this for me is the thought of you sitting in front of the TV at 5 o'clock in the morning, cheering on UKIP!!!!!! :D
:D

There's certainly no party that represents my views that the tax burden is way too low but then again I'm a lefty at heart.

Same here. I mean, raising the tax-free allowance by £600 means £10 less tax a month. It's virtually meaningless to me personally, but what's the cost nationally? What has been cut just to give workers a few extra biscuits?

Having watched all the leaders debates and taken an active interest in this election I have come to the view that a hung Parliament would actually be a good thing. However I appreciate the views of those who think the electric chair or lethal injection to be more humane.

1667, Raid on the Medway. We towed away your flagship, the Royal Charles, and burned the rest of the fleet, as well as the docks. You're still not over it? You can still see the stern of the Royal Charles in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. :)
So that's why they Copenhagenized the Danish fleet in 1807. They merely made the same mistake as everyone else and thought Dutch = Danish ;)

Returning to present time, I'm pleased to note that the Danish public broadcaster has arranged for BBC's Election Night coverage to be streamed on their website. It's just not the same without the swing-o-meter and Paxman (if they've dusted him off for this year) grilling people unsuspecting victims :D

I can proudly state, that in 2010, I was awake for Lembit :D

He is not on the Beeb this year. He is working for Channel 4 instead, with David Mitchell. They are, I think, attempting to add some levity to the proceedings.

Paxman has moved to Channel 4, I'm afraid.

You'll have to make do with Jeremy Vine doing a risibly poor impersonation of Peter Snow....

Where can I buy NHS shares?
You can't. You instead buy shares in companies who now do for a profit what the NHS did at cost. See circle holdings as an example http://www.circleholdingsplc.com/about/about-circle

And yes there are good reasons* for this NHS providor to be an offshore company, which makes it an even more attractive investment opertunity.

*although taxation is the only one I can think of right now

My daughter, in her early 20s, (she lives elsewhere in the same town as us) phoned me earlier. She wanted to vote but wasn't sure if she was registered as she could not remember getting a card - it would be her first time.I suggested she pop to the polling station and ask them there if she was on the list.

Got a text message later from her a bit later. 'Voted! Feel sort of responsible!'

I may be an old cynic but I felt weirdly proud.

This is a curious post. An avowed left-winger who doesn't respect the fact that the government has made low paid workers better off, and who justifies this view by saying that it doesn't mean much to him/ her personally.

Personally, I think it one of the government's finest achievements that they managed to take millions, (literally), of lower paid workers out of income tax altogether at a time of extreme financial difficulty. They have never had enough credit for this.

At the same time they also reduced by 5% the tax paid on earnings over 150k. Given low paid workers get tax credit top ups I am not sure whether the raising of the tax free allowance reduced the top up or not. The tax cut for the rich however was a real saving.

How patronising. For someone to be better off they have to be earning more than £10,000 per year. As noted, raising the TFA by £600 only means £120 less in tax per year. So someone actually earning £10,600 goes from getting £873.33 (less NI) in their hand, to £883.33. A massive increase of 1.15%. It's such a derisory amount that it hardly makes any difference, but at what cost in the forms of cuts elsewhere? £120 million for every million workers who "benefit" the price of a few cups of coffe/beer a month.
