Something, I think, People didn't notice about the GZ Mosque
The debate seems to be whether Sheik whatshisface who will head the place is really a moderate, in which case the mosque should go ahead, or if he is really an extremist who wants the mosque as a sign of conquest over the infidels, in which case it should be stopped.
But did it occur to anybody that this is all besides the point? Freedom of worship and speech means that he has a right to build the mosque even if he openly declares that he wants it as a sign of 9/11's glorious victory over the infidels.
Heck, I have the right to build a shrine to Satan there, with a big sign saying "Welcome to hell!" with a name list of all the victims of 9/11 (none of them believed in the exact correct religion, you see).
Both would be deeply offensive and disgusting, but not illegal. Once you start banning religious worship that hurts people's feeling... I don't need to complete that sentence, I'm sure.
Will the Islamists see this as a sign of victory over the weak and pathetic infidels? Of course they will. So? They will see banning the mosque as a sign of the prosecution of the innocent Muslims by infidels, too.
If the Sheik deliberately wants to offend, then you can offend him back. Open a strip club staffed only by Muslim women next doors. Organize a Muslim gay pride parade outside the mosque. Etc.
I recommend no such action and am not saying the Sheik is trying to deliberately offend. I am merely saying that once you allow him to not offend, you, too, will be next in the line to be muzzled so as to not offend somebody else's feelings.
Since when are somebody's hurt feelings the limit of other people's constitutional rights?
