Two cops shot dead in rural Australia

Another man has been arrested, but they're not saying who.

On the TV news they said drug and firearm possessions. He denied he met Freeman, but said they communicated on the Internet.

Australia and the US seem to display a similar pattern: rural isolation
fosters aggressive ignorance.

According to the ABC article they also seek isolation.
Not surprising- out here it is easy to go an entire week without seeing another person unless you go into town...

'the government' is rarely seen in any form, and being bushland, you can often get away with a hell of a lot buildingwise without even being noticed (I built a large shed 9mx21m on my property, and the council inspector was surprised that I had even bothered getting council permission at all "This is the first shed I have ever done a building inspection on ever out here" and he had been working for them for over a decade...)

The only reason I did so was I am running a business from it, and I needed that for my public liability insurance coverage...

Interesting. That sounds like a remnant of the frontier attitude: if you can see the smoke
from your neighbor's chimney, it's time to.moce on. Dunno if that prevailed in Australia.
Isolation for indivuals is easy down where you are, and the early tendency was, I think, to
seek community and its advantages when you could. (Fill the gaps, please; I've never
been.)

Of course, your little settlement was still isolated as hell, whether in Stralia or Wyoming or
Saskatchewan or anywhere else. Perhaps that's the kind of isolation-mind that's grown
dangerous in more modern times: a belligerent fostering of ignorantly aggressive
attitudes that don't just deny reality, they defy it.

And then there's urban isolation, typified by the ghetto mind. That looks from a
distance rather more florid, given to dumbass mythologies that glorify the ghettoized
group. Still ignorant and antisocial, of course, and to that extent dangerous.

Escaping or avoiding the wider world must offer some kind of reward. Comfort? Obliviousness?
The illusion of strength?

Some measure of security, that is, real strength?

Time for me to shut up and refect on my rural isolate origins and what they
felt like way back then.

Police are now reporting that they believe Freeman has accomplices. This would be very disappointing. If anyone is providing him assistance they can look forward to many years behind bars.

Considering the attitude of some of the locals around here, I wouldn't be surprised if there weren't indeed some either actively helping him or at least not saying anything they know about...

(there are a small group here that still talk about the three murderers up here in Qld as if they are some kind of 'Ned Kelly' heroes...)

In case some non Australians think that Ned Kelly is universally regarded as a freedom fighting hero, to me, and most people I know, he was a violent police killing thug, whose death by hanging was a very good thing.

We did a slow drive (like 2 months) from Cairns to Brisbane a few years ago. Only to drop in to see a long-time friend and her parents on the way.
Sort of via Finch Hatton Gorge. We stayed in some pretty cheap and rough motels.
It was fun but pretty sketchy. Came across some very strange - and quite frightening people. Especially the night when all the miners descended on (?) Mackay. The place was wrecked, but cleaned up within a couple of hours.
Pretty ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ racist too.

Many years, eh? What's the usual tariff, in Australia, for a first time offense of obstructing an investigation? Many years? Even US courts don't usually go that hard, on that kind of offense.

That was pretty much the norm for Mackay back then (I spent a lot of time living there when I was working the mines in the Bowen basin)- there were a lot of guys making big $$$ and working either a 2 on 1 off or 3 on 1 off, and when they had time off they would go hog wild (you basically couldn't drink when working the mines as they had the 'marble dip' when walking through the gate- you reached into a bag, got the coloured marble, you went for a drug and alcohol test before starting work, 0.00 BAL...)

So when they got their week off, many would basically drop a few grand in a week, and get completely ◊◊◊◊ faced....
And yeah, a lot of the country boys were indeed extremely racist...

Its a ghost town in comparison these days- the end of the mining boom really killed it off (Paget, where the companies I worked for had their headquarters, had literally blocks of basically abandoned buildings only a few years old the last time I visited up there for a wedding- some have literally never had a single person in them ever- built during the boom, which ended before they were occupied)

Providing material support to a murderer is a long way from simple obstruction. It is a serious offence. They can be charged as an accessory after the fact, which can carry a sentence of 20 years.

Here is the reference required for the above post

Maximum penalty:
(a) if the offence committed by the principal offender is murder—imprisonment for 20 years, 2 000 penalty units or both; or

Loaning a murderer your car knowing that he killed two police officers would land you in serious trouble. About your only defense would be that you did not know he is a killer. I doubt that police would take long to detect this fact. One thing they might do is trace every car registered in the area.

Edit. If he wanted to get away quickly his best bet would be to steal a bicycle. I hope he has plenty of cash. If he uses a credit card then the police will know where he is. Otherwise, he can stay in a hiding place that is well stocked with food, etc until the police give up. That could take weeks.
