Two cops shot dead in rural Australia

According to everything I know about rural Australia, he's in the billabong with a jumbuck in his tucker bag.

SovCits are an uncommon nuisance in America but rarely are they murderers or cop killers.

More sovcidiots sadly.

Makes me wonder if we need to bring corporal punishment back.

One mention of: "I'm not driving, I'm travelling." Fifty lashes in the public square.
Not sure he's a sovcit. More like a prepper with a criminal history. But having shot some cops, he's in real trouble now. They won't go soft on him when they catch him.

Not true on both counts. A post I made in the Australian Politics thread:

And I hope people don’t think this may be in the wrong thread, because the so called sovereign citizen movement is growing in Australia and this is a political issue. A couple of years ago two police were killed serving a warrant on sov cits in Queensland. Just over a week ago 4Corners ran a show on these idiots.

The growing movement challenging the authority of courts, councils and cops

A growing coalition of groups who reject the legitimacy of governments and courts are engaged in what some call a "quasi-civil war".

But the stakes have now risen and Australia needs to crack down on these evil cookers. Two police were killed and one injured in the (normally peaceful) Victorian high country serving a warrant for sex crimes. The police seemed well prepared with 10 officers attending, but were ambushed by this sovereign citizen. He is still at large with his wife and children.

Porepunkah shooting latest: Manhunt under way after two police officers killed

The situation in Porepunkah, about 300km north-east of Melbourne, is an "active incident" with dozens of police and emergency services at the scene.

  • A manhunt is under way after two police officers were shot dead in the small alpine town of Porepunkah in Australia's Victoria state
  • A 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable have been killed, police say, and a third officer is in hospital with non life-threatening injuries

I worked for Victoria Police for many years, still know serving police and have a son-in-law in the job.

A lot is unknown. Yes,10 police is a decent number, but did they all have body armour and guns drawn?

A very sad day, but governments around Australia need to show no mercy to the disregard of the law by sov cits, and drive them into the ground.

Finally I would not shed a tear if the shooter doesn’t get out of this alive, as long as his family is safe.

From the linked article above:

Australian media report Mr Freeman previously made headlines 2021 when he attempted to privately prosecute then Victoria premier Daniel Andrews for treason and fraud. He was arrested while protesting outside of court before the hearing.

Mr Freeman claims to be a "sovereign citizen" - which refers to someone who falsely believes they are not subject to Australian laws and government authority.

Called SovCits for short, these people have been a presence in the nation for decades, according to the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

The good news is that the wife and children have reported to police.

I now doubt this guy will be captured alive. He will keep shooting at police or he will use a gun on himself.

Yes, I read it. Lots of people claim to be sovcits. But they are mostly just maladjusted whingers who got caught by the law and are trying to hook into a way to avoid the legal ramifications.

This guy was much more akin to a prepper, in my view. Living alone off the grid in a caravan, hunting locally, etc. He was actually being approached by the police over something to do with sexual assault of a minor, not his sovcit ideas. He was arrested previously for assault or something similar, not his sovcit ideas.

The one thing that worries me is how he got a gun license.

It’s probably not a major issue really, but it was reported that he was part of a group who tried to issue proceedings with the Victorian government during Covid, which is far more typical of sov cits than preppers. Whatever, it seems he has been unhinged for some time.

I haven’t read that he has a firearm licence with one report saying he had a home made gun. But if he does have a licence, there are big holes in the system.

Aussies, please update this thread of they catch the guy. It may not make international news.

Absolutely. (If you want sovcit Aussie-style, look at Hutt River Province.)

I may have made the ignorant assumption that if he was armed then he had a firearms license of some sort. Slightly blinkered thinking on my part.

My son-in-law, the detective, told me it’s amazing what people use to make guns, and I’m not talking about 3D printed guns, but those made of plumbing pipes etc.
