Two cops shot dead in rural Australia

Well police are saying that he is heavily armed, so he likely has at least a decent model rifle, as well as the police pistols he is said to have taken. I find the latter puzzling. Unless the police had drawn their weapons (and it was reported they were ambushed) it is very difficult, bordering on impossible, to just take a pistol from modern police holsters.

Bunger-guns, essentially. But you can rig them to use shotgun shells.
Slam guns. A handful of standard black gas pipe is all you need (same diameter as a 12ga barrel/chamber) and a teeny tiny bit of mechanical sense to make a firing pin land where it needs to.

They say this guys wife and kids are MIA? Hoping for the best, there.

10 cops to confront the guy about previous sex crimes? Is that a normal contingent to do this? Seems like a lot. And was this type of cop that carries out this kind of duty not normally carrying a sidearm?

Some people here get that stuff online from US sources. Also, 3D print guns.

They have been reported as safe.

He has been involved previously in scuffles with cops trying to harass politicians, etc. Apparently he has been a known "handful" for some time. Being unsure of what they might have been walking into, 10 cops sounds about right. They may have all been armed - all police are weapons trained. Sounds like he ambushed the three who were shot, or shot from cover, then fled before the others could catch him.

That's true, unless you know how the holsters work.

The wife and kids reported to police some hours ago, so he is on his own.

And 10 is a lot of police to issue a warrant. There is not a police station at Porepunkah, which has a population of only 1000, so the police were likely from nearby Bright.

The man involved was known to police, so this explains the number, plus as I said earlier police in country Queensland were ambushed and killed a couple of years ago.

But the armed attack would not have been expected, otherwise they would have sent in the Armed Response Group or the SOGs.

Rest assured this will be fully investigated and reported on.

Generally, all police are armed in Australia.

The rare exception would be when they are in Court, or visiting someone in prison.

Yup. And they don't ◊◊◊◊ around.

The guy is going to end up either dead in the bush, or in jail for many lifetimes regretting his decisions. No other outcome possible.

Good to hear the guys wife and kids are safe, although it doesn't sound like living with this murderous loon would have been a walk in the park.

I'm pretty sure they're going to find his body somewhere in the bush. He's disappeared, he spent the night out there somewhere, and it wasn't nice weather either.

I think if he's not already dead he will be soon.

Details of the murdered police have been released:

One, a young copper born in Belgium and recently seconded to north east Victoria. Another a 30 year veteran who was days from retirement. He was a senior constable, a rank you get to automatically, so clearly he was satisfied to be a country copper and looking forward to retirement in a beautiful place..

An utter tragedy.

I have a friend who used to be a police officer in Victoria. He's not doing great right now.
I was working for the force when both the Walsh St and Silk/Miller police murders in the 1980s and 1990s happened, two killed in each event. Not only were the times extremely sad and tense, the professionalism of the force was tested. There were times, particularly after Walsh St, where Victoria Police did not cover themselves in glory.

A lot of water under the bridge since then and I’m certain they will act entirely properly in concluding this matter.

He is definitely a sovcit (he has prior court history with sovcit arguments used- initiated BY him lol) as were the Qld ones (who were actually relatively close to me, and well known on the local FB page before being banned by the admin...)

Its a growing (and worrying) trend worldwide, it hasn't been 'just a US thing' for well over a decade or more now...

Absolutely agreed. They have been usually treated with benign amusement by police in the past. I think that is all over now and even the most trivial sov cit actions will be jumped on.

Yeah, there was a time when "Bang bang stop or I'll shoot" was the standard "joke". Fortunately, that was quite some time ago. Certainly before my friend joined the force.

For those who were wondering, he did have a gun license, but he lost it last year. Also his driver's license. He was a real piece of work.

Agreed. I know for a fact that in those days a Deputy Commissioner actually congratulated (sarcastically) an officer for refraining from shooting a crook escaping over a back fence.

Thanks. Doesn’t surprise. It’s extremely difficult to get a decent rifle without a licence. But I would have expected the firearm to be confiscated when he lost the licence.

Fully agree. Lose the gun licence, all your weapons should get confiscated. IF you can find them all...

I would bet this ◊◊◊◊◊◊ had a big crate full of nasty shooters and much ammo kept hidden somewhere in the bush for just this type of occasion.
