Two cops shot dead in rural Australia

SovCit is a U.S. legal conspiracy theory, in Commonwealth jurisdictions it's more often termed "Freeman on the Land" or FOTL.
They also use references to US law over here, IIRC.
The previous massacre in Queensland was a family that was mentored by a US sovcit.

I would not want to be one of the cops doing the hunting. He probably has some hideouts prepared and the bush is described as impenetrable. That means you can't search it easily and can be ambushed easily. He will have no hesitation in killing again.

As I mentioned, I'm in the area right now (not the immediate area of course) and the weather outside is savage. Wind, freezing rain, did I mention the wind?

If he's out in the bush in this, and he isn't fully prepared, he is not having a good time.

He's probably having the time of his life, as a prepper. Whether he is any good as a prepper, we will see, by how long he's out there.

A side issue: Is there much of a black market in guns & ammo in Australia?
Much??
not particularly...

A market- yes...

The penalties however are quite severe, so you have to be a crim already, or already mentally screwed up to even think about getting an illegal gun...

Particularly as it isn't THAT hard to get a rifle, if you have a clean record...

(despite the bleatings of the US far-rightwing, guns are NOT banned in Australia, just strongly regulated, and you have to follow the rules in acquiring, using and storing them (not particularly difficult btw)- many rural communities have a gunshop here)

The penalties for having an unlicenced firearm here in Qld is up to ten years in jail, or $16000 fine- thats not for using it, just having it....

Given that, the black market is actually quite small... (not surprising lol- a firearms offence is never looked upon lightly here, and you are likely to get near to the maximum penalty in every case...)

The one near me was 3 sovcits (I saw their postings on the local FB page before they were banned and deleted lol- definitely sovcit material) that killed two local cops and one of their neighbours- it was scary as they planned on disappearing into the same bushland that my block is part of... (although its about an hours drive to where they were lol)

There's a LOT of overlap in the various conspiracy types, with many subscribing to various conspiracy theories (the ones near me were vocal antivaxers as well, and one had posted several times about the 'faked moon landings'...)

Not uncommon for those who believe in one conspiracy theory to readily accept any and all of them....

If you really want an illegal gun, there are certainly ways you can get it. You'll have to deal with some pretty shady people though.

He had "an arsenal of weapons".

Sadly, the same exists in Tara, where the two Queensland cops were shot- there's a LOT of ignorance in many rural communities still- antivaxers, sovcits/FOTL and anti government types all exist in large numbers in many of the smaller rural towns.... (along with the usual racists, bigots, homophobes and sexists....)

Stepping into many small rural towns is like stepping back to the 1950's.....

This is one reason I would never contemplate living in Queensland outside any major city. Even regional cities are problematic. Cairns, for all its obvious attractions, is chock full of racists (I’ve been there many times for work). And, as you say, small towns would simply be unsafe.

Its no different in any other state- the rural areas are full of towns like that...
Tamworth, Armidale and Casino in NSW are just as bad (from personal experience)- and WA and the NT have towns I've been in that make Tara look positively 22th century in its attitudes lol

Low education rates and 'conservative' attitudes in rural areas are imho one of the major factors in this...

Interesting. I spent about 25 years travelling around regional Australia for work and agree with you about NSW towns. The further west the worse. Never thought Casino was so bad though.

The interesting thing is I didn’t get those vibes in Victorian towns. There are reasons for this I think. Firstly, Victoria has the lowest percentage of indigenous. We don’t have hell holes like Wilcannia to generate redneck rage, for example.

Also, Victoria in particular has always welcomed migrants.

Casino is well known by the locals in other towns in the area as redneck city... and yes its pretty bad there...
Haven't been to Victoria that often (that and Tassy are the only states I haven't worked in over the years lol) so can't really comment on that, but the rural divide is definitely a major 'thing' in most parts of Australia for all the usual type behaviours we expect from the far right...

Fair enough. No argument.

The Murdoch Press stage show called the "Bush Summit" says that Labor is out of touch with the bush.

Well as the murdoch press considers anything to the left of Hitler to be 'lefty pinko commies', I wouldnt be overly concerned with their opinions on anything...

Sadly they are excellent at propaganda, there's a big push on atm in rural areas with various groups draping themselves in the Aussie flag and claiming 'patriotism' when once you look at them, its just more of the same tired old outright racism the rural people seem to lap up...
(the latest to be being pushed hard around here atm is a group calling itself Australia by Aussie- scratch the surface and its the same tired old rightwing slop thats been fed out by the Libs and Nats for decades...)
