Reminds me of things in the past like "READ THE TRANSCRIPTS!" being used as a defense. Yeah? They clearly showed exactly what he was being called out for and didn't exonerate him at all. ETA: They never did explain what was supposedly exonerating in that, either way.

That's a pretty good point. My own feeling is that idiocy like this is the result of our having become a society in which so many people self-validate through social media. Maybe not even a majority of people, but since those who do are by their nature the loudest, and since social media itself is, by its nature, the sort of thing that rewards the loud, we get a culture war in which the weapons are things like "ROTFLMAO!" and "TROLLED!"

To poke at this just a little - "The weakest dog barks the loudest" seems to be quite relevant to this. There's also something to be said about how cults often work to isolate and drive people into a corner so they'll grasp onto their social connections within and through the cult all the more tightly. Both of those seem very relevant to what you seem to be invoking.

(Disclaimer- I am not on any social media, unless you count this site as one. And I don't mean to disrespect people who do use it, because it is, in this day and age, a necessity for a lot of people in business and a convenience for a lot of people who just want to stay in touch with friends/family.)

While this site is iffy to count as social media in the sense that you're likely thinking of, it does serve a similar role to some extent, especially with the likes feature. Strictly speaking, though, these forums do seem to qualify, by definition, as an instance of social media. It's just that a bunch of the specifics, such as the relatively higher levels of critical thinking overall because of who it's officially for, the post lengths allowed, and the lack of profit-maximization or politically-skewed algorithms choosing what you see for you, make it far less problematic overall.
