Trump's Second Term

USA won everything when it was the department of war.

Trump: Department of war sounded better. I don't want to be defense only. We want defense but we want offense, too. As department of war, we won everything. We won everything. I think we'll have to go back to that.

Coming soon: The Department of Peace, the Department of Truth, the Department of Plenty, and the Department of Love.
("Ministry" sounds too foreign.)

Wasn't it Democrat Clinton who removed the Glass-Steagall banking restrictions?
In the end, perhaps, much as, again, there's notably more to that story. Reagan poked some gaping holes in it and Republicans largely led the way in eroding it in the years following. By Clinton's time, Glass-Steagall was plenty problematic, regardless. There's certainly an argument to be made that it would still have been better not to repeal those restrictions despite that, but that would be very tangential to this thread and quickly go very OT.

With that said, the things covered by Glass-Steagall are of limited relevance to the economic crisis in question, by the look of it. It's probably not irrelevant, certainly, but there's much more to the story of what was going on there and it seems like Glass-Steagall wouldn't have set hard limits that could have stopped the problems. A little bit like the repeal of the FAIR Act was relevant to the descent of media quality and regulation, but not the cause itself and the FAIR Act would be very poorly suited to address most of the problems that have arisen since.

Of notably more relevance to the economic crisis in question was the broad, hard, and sustained deregulation push by the Republican Party that started long before Clinton, as well as the culture and values being pushed by the Republican Party alongside that. Since I mentioned the FAIR Act, I'll add that the same applies to that, too.

Trump: "Beverly Hills... I have friends, they leave their trunk open for their car bc they know they're going to be vandalized. They don't want the trunk ripped off in order for them to steal what's in their bag. They leave their doors open so when they go in to steal the radio or whatever they take, they don't rip off the door. They leave the doors totally open so the criminals, when they go and open the door, they don't have to break the windows & kill the car"

Note Mr. Lincoln there, bowing his head in shame.

Eh.... Under President Obama the US debt doubled. This may not be something about Trump we want to flaunt around. 25% increase vs 100% increase is ewwwww....
I care more about total debt than percentages of increase. As well as the interest that is being paid on the debt.

It's like a parallel universe where no facts can be checked and his claims create reality.

So during Trump 1.0 nobody dared use a public park in DC. That's why the inauguration was so sparsely attended. Oh wait no I forgot they were record crowds - they just don't show up in pictures because cameras lie. We probably need to send the National Guard in to fix Kodak or something. People are saying we should do that. Many people.
Didn't a whole bunch of people enjoy a nice, peaceful day out there in January 2021?

If I thought he had any kind of sense of humour I'd think that he was playing some kind of game to see how outrageous a claim he could get away with unchallenged.

Back in the day, there were claims that some people would leave their junker car unlocked to avoid the windows being broken and/or leaving a "no radio in car" notice. These claims were largely anecdotal and reportedly not effective.

Also, these days radios (or more accurately infotainment units) aren't readily removable or stealable. ISTM that this "anecdote" is some part-remembered anecdote from the 1980s, where Trump increasingly seems to be residing these days.

They should lose their Licenses for their unfair coverage of Republicans and/or Conservatives, but at a minimum, they should pay up BIG for having the privilege of using the most valuable airwaves anywhere at anytime!!! Crooked “journalism” should not be rewarded, it should be terminated!!!”

533. Trump: “Except what is written and broadcast in the Fake News, I now have the highest poll numbers I’ve ever had, some in the 60’s and even 70’s. Thank you. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

534. Trump: “I have a very good relationship with Kim Jong Un. North Korea. I look forward to seeing him. I know him better than anybody almost, other than his sister. His sister knows him pretty well.”

535. Reporter: ”Are you prepared to order National Guard troops into American cities if those governors don’t request the federal deployment?”
Trump: “I am.”

530. Trump: “Governor Wes Moore of Maryland has asked, in a rather nasty and provocative tone, that I “walk the streets of Maryland” with him. I assume he is talking about out of control, crime ridden, Baltimore? As President, I would much prefer that he clean up this Crime disaster before I go there for a “walk.” Wes Moore’s record on Crime is a very bad one, unless he fudges his figures on crime like many of the other “Blue States” are doing. But if Wes Moore needs help, like Gavin Newscum did in L.A., I will send in the “troops,” which is being done in nearby DC, and quickly clean up the Crime. After only one week, there is NO CRIME AND NO MURDER IN DC! When it is like that in Baltimore, I will proudly “walk the streets” with the failing, because of Crime, Governor of Maryland. P.S. Baltimore is ranked the 4th WORST CITY IN THE NATION IN CRIME & MURDER. Stop talking and get to work, Wes. I’ll then see you on the streets!!! Also, I gave Wes Moore a lot of money to fix his demolished bridge. I will now have to rethink that decision??? Thank you for your attention to this matter. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DJT”

531. JD Vance: “This is how wars ultimately get settled. If you go back to World War 2, if you go back to every major conflict in human history, they all end with some kind of negotiation.”

Chicago is a mess. And we’ll straighten that one out probably next ... African Americans ladies, beautiful ladies, are saying ‘please President Trump, come to Chicago’”

525. Trump: “Mayor Bowser better get her act straight or she won’t be mayor very long because we’ll take it over with the federal government and run it like it’s supposed to be run ... it was a crime-invested rat hole.”

526. Trump: “You see how this is looking. I can’t tell you how much that gold costs. A lot of money. There is nothing like gold and nothing like solid gold, but with this beautiful -- needed it. 527. Reporter: “Have you spoke to Vladimir Putin about the fact that a big US factory was hit in an airstrike in Ukraine?”
Trump: “I’m not happy about anything having to do with that war. I settled 7 wars, and actually if you think about pre-wars, add 3 more so it would be 10.”

528. Powell: “This slowdown is much larger than assessed just a month ago, as the earlier figures for May and June were revised down substantially. But it does not appear that the slowdown in job growth has opened up a large margin of slack in the labor market, an outcome we want to avoid.”

Trump orders removal of Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook

He said there was "sufficient reason" to believe Cook had made false statements on mortgage agreements, and cited constitutional powers which he said allowed him to remove her.

In response, Cook has said Trump has no authority to fire her and she will not resign.

She was appointed by Trump's predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden, in 2022 and is the first African American woman to serve in the role.
