Trump's Second Term

Well, it's bestowed on the faithful in good standing with the church at Mass on Ash Wednesday.

It's not for parading on television
As a non-catholic I was unaware it was a thing until some fellow students turned up with ash smeared on their foreheads. One thing they said was you're not supposed to wash it off.

But on the other hand they had a little smear of it. Not a big, ostentatiously-crafted cross.

In addition to the 240,000 Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion, 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, and 70,000 Afghans escaping the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan will all be going.

Low hanging fruit as they say.

Trump to revoke legal status for 240,000 Ukrainians as US steps up deportations
Oh, for a journalist willing to risk asking if this means it's safe for them to go home because Putin has told Trump he's going to stop bombing civilians in Ukrainian cities.

Angry, betrayed and anxious: Canadians react to Trump's tariffs and annexation threat

What a difference a border can make:
  • When Trump left office at the end of his first term, he had a 58% disapproval rating and only 39% approve, for a spread of 19 points disapprove
  • When Biden left office, he had a 57% disapproval rating and only 37% approve, for a spread of 20 points disapprove
  • In Canada, right now Trump has a 79% disapproval rating and only 17% approve, for a spread of 62 points disapprove
Here in Canada, Trump's policies could well lead to a recession with thousands of jobs lost and a substantial increase in our deficit and national debt. But we didn't even get a say in this!

I certainly believe Americans should be able to elect their government without interference from other countries. But right now, for Canadians this sucks!

If this is the same poll I saw the other day, it is interesting to see how it breaks down along our own party lines. Not surprisingly, people who identify as supporters of the LPC, NDP, Bloc or Green hate the man with the heat of a thousand suns. Conservatives on the other hand were more around the 50/50 mark, making it pretty obvious who will sell our country down the river if they get elected.

Fortunately, the federal election polls have tightened considerably and a CPC majority is looking less and less likely right now. CBC's poll tracker currently has a 51% chance of a CPC majority, 31% of a minority and a 14% chance of a liberal minority government. Those numbers would have been unthinkable even 2 months ago.

What the ◊◊◊◊ is on his face?

I know what it signifies, but damn if it doesn’t give Charles Manson vibes.

He did similar in his first administration and a number of them decided to escape into Canada which caused quite a backlog of refugee applications in our country. My wife was applying for permanent resident status at the time and right after she applied, the wait time went from 6 weeks to 12 months due to the influx. I have nothing against anyone coming here to escape a bad situation elsewhere but as a country with 1/9 the population of the US, it puts quite a strain on resources to absorb that many newcomers at once. Lack of housing being the foremost concern.

To be fair I saw a Democrat Mayor with one this morning too, admittedly hers was a bit of a smudge while his looks like Donnie did it with his Sharpie... I vaguely remember it being a thing over here when I was a kid but it's been decades since I've seen anyone with one.

Over here it's usually Roman Catholics and High Anglicans that daub it on - as part of attending service, traditionally you are meant to wash it off - as that peacenik-commie-wears-a-dress blue-eyed blond Jesus tells you.

I have vague memories of it as a kid at my CofE school in the 70’s, but really vague.

Note the phrase: The planned rollback of protections for Ukrainians was underway before Trump publicly feuded with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy last week.

So Trump never had any intention of negotiating a peace deal. It was 'surrender' all along with USD500m worth of free rare minerals thrown in for him and his gang.

I wonder what Jesus would have said? Ah, it tells us in Matt. 6:5.

He also said "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward."

To be completely accurate, I think it was that he intended the "surrender...with USD500m worth of free rare minerals thrown in for him and his gang" to be the "peace deal" he wanted to negotiate and crow over. He certainly never had any intention of doing any more to assure an equitable peace than to throw Ukraine under the bus, then to demand a Nobel for it.

New Zealand has fired its most senior envoy to the United Kingdom over remarks that questioned US President Donald Trump's grasp of history.

At an event in London on Tuesday, High Commissioner Phil Goff compared efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine to the 1938 Munich Agreement, which allowed Adolf Hitler to annex part of Czechoslovakia.

Mr Goff recalled how Sir Winston Churchill had criticised the agreement, then said of the US leader: "President Trump has restored the bust of Churchill to the Oval Office. But do you think he really understands history?"

His comments were "deeply disappointing" and made his position "untenable", New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters said.

CNBC: According to CDP, only 43 pounds of fentanyl were seized at the Canadian border last year

LUTNICK: I think autopsy deaths, as horrible as that is, should be the statistic

CNBC: But Americans are smuggling it over. It's not just Canadians.

LUTNICK: Well look, crooks are cooks
