Yes, I read an article on this, straight line acceleration is great but curves are a problem. In many science fiction novels 'fighters' are catapulted in to the air / space by being shot off maglev catapults. For instance my heroines.

They are, of course, aware of that.
The system is meant as a general proof of concept, with many potential military and space applications.
And China has lots of megacities far away from each other.

Airfix did kits of the Angel's Spectrum Interceptor fighters.

And yet their only maglev line is a straight ride from Shanghai airport to the city which is a massive loss maker and only there to impress tourists. Their main lines are TGV types.

A former colleague told me that her family lived near Shanghai.

In the same way that Washington DC is close to New York.
