The Grauniad article Norman linked to has the acting mayor stating that they have yet to submit a formal planning application.

Hmmm, I find it difficult to believe that a Queensland developer who has been building high rise appartments and hotels on the Gold Coast for yonks is dumping Trump for reasons of high principle. I think it’s far more likely that he realised the obstacles he would face getting that monstrosity approved.

Cr Tate met with Donald and Eric Trump at Mar-a-Lago in the days before the deal was announced, with the Trump Organization footing the cost of Cr Tate's meals, accommodation and transfers.

"The Trump Organization wants a lot more for their brand on the funding side of things, to operate it and the percentage of return," Cr Tate said.

"[Meanwhile] the developer's going, 'Well, I'm putting in all of my money in and you're actually going to take quite a lot of profit', so I think that's why they're parting ways."

Industry sources who have spoken to financiers approached to fund the project said some investors had been wary about the risk associated with a luxury hotel on the Gold Coast."

Numerous “legacy” media outlets seem to indicate that it was the Aussie developer who was toxic, and indeed quote their CEO as stating it was the Trump Organisation that pulled the pin, e.g.,

However, the developer’s chief executive David Young said The Trump Organisation had pulled the pin on the deal, citing ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and growing “toxic” views of the US President.

As much as I love a Trump bashing, most stories point out Young’s previous bankruptcy and other development failures. Apparently a development plan has not even been submitted to the Gold Coast council.

A spokesperson for the Trump Organization said the company had been excited to bring the project to the Gold Coast, but that Altus failed to meet certain obligations.

"After months of negotiations and empty promises, Altus Property Group was unable to meet the most basic financial obligation," the spokesperson said.

Thank you. As I said earlier I just can’t bring myself to view a white shoe Gold Coast developer making a principled decision. Ever over anything.
